A Bat in the Daytime

Alone I wait,
Going but not moving,
Growing but not changing.
All I've left to do is wander.

To exist is to feel pain,
To lose often and rarely gain,
"Take it but with a grain"
I can hear them say.

But a grain to one is a feast to another.

I wish that I could see my mother.

She hides in plain sight,
Makes herself slight,
And lies, because I know that she's not alright.

She is my life.
She's given what she can,
         and even what she can't.
Trees may bend, but at too great a slant
even the strongest meet their end.

Like a bat in the day I fly,
Overwhelmed, confused, without an answer to why.
"Blind as a bat" the loon crows.
I'm not blind.
I see too much.

And also not enough.
