Just like that? But, of course, that was why people came to this place. The drinks and dancing made a convenient cover story.

Vera's expression started to change from confidence to uncertainty, and Nic knew he had to say something. His voice came out in a husky whisper. "L-let's get out of here." He knew his desire showed right on his face, but the dance had ended.

Vera raised her arched eyebrows and inclined her head toward the exit.

Nic didn't dare look over at Zane as he took Vera's delicate hand in his own and led her away from the bar. Her palm radiated warmth. I guess vampires aren't cold after all. He grinned as they went past the hostess stand.

"What's so funny?" Vera asked, giving his hand a squeeze.

Nic cleared his throat, hoping she wouldn't get offended. "Uh, well, my roommate, Zane? The guy making bad jokes? He's not really into vampires, and one of the reasons is because he thinks they're cold. But you're so warm."

Vera turned her head away toward the street. "I'm a little different than the rest of them," she said.

"You seem way cooler than those snobs, honestly." I'll take the country cousin any day.

When she turned back to him, Vera's face beamed with hope and relief. "Oh, I'm so glad you think so." She stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, a small restraining hand on Nic's arm. Her cute blonde hair waved softly against her cheek. As she looked up at him, the warm streetlights shone on her face like movie lighting. "You seem really nice," she said. She raised up on her toes and kissed his cheek, leaving an impression of her summer perfume.

Her touch was so light, but heat spread out from where her hands rested over his shoulders, and every inch of his skin tingled. "I... I guess so." He didn't know what he was saying; the meaningless words just came from his lips.

Nic couldn't even blame it on arousal and 'thinking with his little head.' He wasn't aroused, which surprised him a little. But Vera wasn't as much a sexual creature as a magical one.

They walked to Nic and Zane's apartment. Nic dashed up a few stairs and unlocked the door, holding it open. He sniffed. Never before had he noticed their three-flat's old building smell quite so much. He hoped it didn't put her off.

The blond girl walked in with an air of wonder, as though she were entering a palace. Her hair bounced as she tilted her head to look at not only Nic's furniture, but also the high ceilings. She smoothed her hands over the bodice of her dress and waited in the entryway. She looked weightless, somehow, as though she hovered instead of stood. Her red lips turned up in a half-smile.

You're in there, bro, Nic imagined his roommate saying. Even imaginary, Zane was right. Nic kicked the door closed and strode toward his dream girl. If this is a movie, I should act the part.

He put his hands around her trim waist, bent his head, and Vera's eyes closed as Nic carefully, finally tasted her glossy red mouth.

She swayed into him, clutching his shoulders. Her sharp nails bit through Nic's fancy red shirt, and fast puffs of breath caressed his face as she allowed him entrance.

Her lip gloss smeared over Nic's mouth, and he thought he could taste something metallic, but he didn't care. Vera was special. And she wanted him. He ran his tongue over her teeth and found her delicately pointed fangs. A small spot of pain bloomed; he'd been cut by her fang and now bled into her mouth.

Normally, he would pull away, but Vera made a small sound in her throat and pulled him against her with surprising strength. They were thigh to thigh now, and Vera whimpered as she sank her teeth into his bottom lip, almost breaking the surface.
