"Looks like we won't be escaping here together after all, Naegi-kun." A sad smile formed on Mukuro's face. Makoto turned back to look at her, noticing the left side of her face darkening. A bleeping also filled the room, signalling a bracelet had been activated by someone doing their forbidden action.
"Ikusaba-san?" He asked worriedly, grabbing her wrist. She blinked, a blood tear rolling out of her left eye. Makoto pulled her down to the floor at the same time as she fell, resting her dying body on him. She had a minute left at most before she succumbed.
"I'm sorry, Naegi-kun." She repeated, her voice weaker now. He shook his head, holding her close. He was starting to tear up, but didn't want the last thing she saw to be him crying.
"You've given me so much hope, Ikusaba-san. You can't leave me now!" He was getting desperate. She fell silent, a small smile appearing on her face. She rarely smiled, but to Makoto her smiles were the most beautiful in the world. Now he would never get to see them again.
"I love you, Naegi-kun." She breathed her final words, her eyes closing. Her body fell completely still, not even the gentle rising and falling of her chest as she breathed anymore.
"Naegi-kun?" Before he could cry he heard the voice of Aoi Asahina behind him. She ran over, gasping in shock when she saw why Makoto looked so devastated. "Ikusaba-san?!" She cried, getting down on her knees beside them. She reached over to shake her, stopping when she saw all the signs of a triggered NG code. She started crying, having grown somewhat close to Mukuro over this killing game. Her crying triggered Makoto, who also started crying. He held Mukuro's body close, trying to keep it as warm as possible as though that would bring her back to life. Eventually they both stopped, and silence filled the room. Makoto picked up her wrist, wanting to see what her forbidden action was. The words 'Letting Makoto Naegi have his back to you' flashed up on the bangle, filling him with despair. He alone had triggered her forbidden action, and he alone had killed her.
"I-I'm sorry... Ikusaba-san..." He said quietly, kissing her forehead gently. He would carry the guilt and burden of her death on his shoulders forever.
