It's a simple fact. Hunters don't really get to have a family. Or vacations. Or a normal life. Dean calls it the 'apple pie life'. It's hard but it is the brutal truth. If you have family they get hurt or die. If you stop hunting somebody you could have saved can die.
This life is hard and never-ending and only the strongest can live it but even we can't keep going forever. We get the little moments between hunts but when normal people would gather to celebrate Halloween we would be dealing with some satanic witch. And on Thanksgiving some kind of twisted monster trying to find the right kind of human to be the centerpiece on their table.
Times where we should be together laughing and enjoying ourselves we are fighting to save lives and not die in the process. But this year would be different. Before I became a hunter, in my late teens, I loved Christmas. The lights, the music, the eggnog. But I hadn't had that for years due to my life and I wasn't going to miss it again.
At first, I thought it was selfish of me to stop hunting even though it might endanger someone but sitting on this couch with a glass of hot cocoa watching the Sam, Dean, and Cas laughing as they exchanged gifts I realized we needed this. We needed a break and we deserved it.
Sam rolled his eyes as he unwrapped yet another set of flannel shirts. If we didn't know what to give someone we didn't give socks in this bunker we gave flannel. Cas was still playing with the fidget spinner Dean thought would be fun to give to him.
"I don't understand. What is it's purpose?" Cas questioned as he spun the gadget. It had taken him a surprisingly long time to figure out how to use it but now he couldn't put it down.
"No, Cas it doesn't have a purpose you're just supposed to spin it," Dean replied with a mischevious smirk.
"Does it have magical properties?"
"No, Cas why?" Sam asked with a confused look.
"I can't seem to stop spinning it." Cas had a perplexed look on his face as he continued to spin it and Dean was chuckling as he watched the entranced angel.
I let out a giggle as I snuggled deeper under a blanket Cas had got for me that was made out of some rare mountain goat fleece or something. I really didn't care where it came from all I cared about was that it was crazy fluffy and warm.
As the rest of the presents disappeared from under the tree and brought more laughter and the occasional bitch face to the group I got more and more excited. There was one present that was still in my room not yet ready to be opened.
When the last gift was gone I got up the couch and told the boys, "Wait, there is one more present."
I sprinted down the hallway as fast as I could trying not to slip in my fuzzy socks. I opened the door to my bedroom which had been closed all day to keep the present hidden. I grabbed the box from the closet and set the present inside. I walked back to the library where the Chrismas tree and our temporary living room was much slower trying not to rustle the box. I entered the room with a smile.
"Dean, you do know that Christ was not born on this day?" Cas said still playing with the fidget spinner. He had apparently learned to spin it on the tip of one finger.
"Really Cas I didn't," Dean returned with sarcasm lacing every word.
"Y/N did you know this isn't, in fact, the day of Christ's birth?" Cas asked me sensing me walking into the room.
I smiled and replied, "Yeah Cas, I did. Unlike this thick headed ass." Before Dean could throw back a retort I sat next to Cas. "I have one last gift. Cas you have been through a lot even before you met us. But since your time with us you have been an angel without wings, you have been human, you have lost a few marbles but the boys and I wanted to give you another human experience."
I hand him the box and motion him to open it. His hands reach for the lid of the box but it jumps right as his fingers touch it. He gives me a concerned look and I only laugh and give him an encouraging smile. I make eye contact with the boys and they both smile before looking back to the angel.
He lifts the lid off completely and out pops a fuzzy head.
"It this a young feline?"
I almost choke at his question. "Yes, Cas. They're called kittens."
"And you called this another human experience?"
"Well, yeah Cas. Not every person has a pet in their life but we thought it would be fun to get one for you." Sam answers.
"Is not Dean allergic to cats?" He says with concern. Sam and I glance at each other with a smirk while Dean blushes a little.
"Yeah, normally. But this is a special breed of cat called a Siberian cat that is hypoallergenic, which means it won't bother Dean." I reassure him with a smirk at Dean.
He gives me a bitch face before turning to Cas who has started to pet the kitten along its back. "It doesn't have a name yet so what are you going to name him?"
He thinks for a moment then simply states, "Grey."
I smirk as Sam pulls out his wallet and hands me ten bucks. "Told ya' he would name it that."
The kitten had climbed out of the box now and was rubbing against Cas's front letting out a low purr. He freezes and looks to me with terror. "Did I upset? I have heard of the wrath of these cats."
It was silent for a moment apart from Greys purring before we all break out laughing. Cas looks at us concerned, still not moving as Grey climbs to his shoulder.
"Guys, I am being serious here. Is it safe to remove Grey from my shoulder?"
The more Cas speaks the funnier it gets. The hilarity of the fact that Castiel an angel of the Lord, the angel that gripped Dean tight and raised him from perdition is afraid of a fluffy little kitten sets in more. After a few minutes of hearty laughter, the boys and I gather ourselves and assure him that Grey won't 'unleash his wrath' on him.
Cas thanks us for the kitten and finally relax as Grey cuddles up in his lap deciding to take a nap. We continue to chat and I drift back into thought.
A moment of peace. A time where we can truly relax and just enjoy ourselves in the safety of the bunker. Our life is hard but as I look around at the tree, the ripped wrapping paper all over and the boys chatting back and forth I realize even though this life takes a toll, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
