"Run now, run! Never ever come back in here and trust the man with the green hat. He'll help you and your brother. Be safe, please. I love you my daughter." mom gripped on my shoulders giving me one last full look before letting go. I shivered and went blank as the absence of her warm touch lingered on my bare shoulders while I drag myself to a safe place not minding if I'll get scratches or wounds. My heart is beating so fast and I felt sobs and shrieks came from me involuntarily.
They wouldn't kill my mom right? She'll be safe. I know it.
I continued to run deeper, it was dark and eerie, my senses went blind and numb but I kept on going until I saw my brother on the other end of the lake crying to himself and on a boat that we used to sail on whenever we feel bored. I smiled at him as the memories flowed in drastically. It'll never be the same, it's over, stop it. I shrugged and waved at him, knowing that he's quickly terrified by the dark and the only thing that lights up the boat he was in is his pendant.
"Lily, come and hop on! T-the gates will close soon! I don't want to stay." he said with a desperate voice as he chocked on his own cry.
I quickly went over to him and started to row the boat. We are traveling so slow but we're far enough to reduce the possibility of others seeing us. The paddles are heavy and the currents are abnormaly high. I struggled but kept on paddling with all of my strength. We can't afford to be caught, I'll never give them Jungkook or me, I'd rather die than to be caught.
"Where's mom? She knows what's happening right?" Jungkook held my hand with his little ones. I smiled but a tear fell down with the little hope of getting out alive. "She stayed for our protection Jookie, she said she'll go after the chaos is gone." and he nodded but the sadness is evident on his round eyes. I know he knows mom is in danger but he doesn't want to be weak, he's so strong. As he try to stop his tears, he picked up the pendant from the chair beside him with shaking hands and gave it to me with a nod, a nod that I know means a lot.
No Jungkook, this is yours, please don't do this.
"You already used yours, I'm big now, I can handle myself." and he smiled straight and went to take over one of the paddles I was holding and started to match my pace. He got quiet but his heavy breathing and hiccups was not hiding the fact that he too is now crying for our mother.
I'm the cause of this mess.
I held the pendant tight. I felt it's sharp edges and it's cold surface. Ah, just like my pendant before, but this isn't mine, this is Jungkook's. He needs it too, we're in danger. I looked over to my little brother and a smile formed on my lips. He's sixteen but he thinks like a grown man already and even gave me his precious pendant not thinking for himself.
"Thank you Jungkook but, I refuse your offer, this is for you my brother. Keep it."
He stopped his paddling and the only thing that is now heard was the soft waves of the river's water and the swaying of the trees. He smiled too but it was a tight one. A forced smile. He gave me a reassuring look on which I got his signal and what he's going to say.
"My life doesn't matter anyway, however, it's you who needs it the most. You need to be alive for us."
And he went back on paddling until we reached a quite familiar place. He looked around and shushed me even before I could speak but I can't accept the fact that my brother thinks of himself that way. The world is too cruel for him. I stood by myself and made sure to not make any noise. As I stand safely on the bay and him tying the boat to a wooden post I hugged him and playfully ruffled his hair, a thing I do to comfort him.
