after about two weeks of completely ignoring Elle, I started feeling a pang of guilt in my chest. Noah didn't.
"she's getting what she deserves, Callie. don't bail on me now."
I shrugged. "Noah, I feel awful. she did something because she was angry and jealous and sad and hurt. knowing you, you'd do far worse if you were in this situation."
he frowned. "fine."
he ate one of the fries off my plate.
"wanna see a movie or something?" I asked.
"or something." he winked.
I shrugged. "not in the mood."
"you haven't been in the mood since this whole thing blew up. tell me what's wrong." his finger grazed the top of my hand.
"everytime we do something I feel like we're adding fuel to the fire. and I know it's ridiculous but it just worries me, like what if Elle literally videotapes it and posts it on youtube, or some perv is looking through the windows."
he pursed his lips. "I don't know how to solve that problem, if I'm honest with you."
I bit my lip. "yeah, me either."
"Callie, me and you are gonna make it. we're in this together, always have been, always will be."
I pulled my hand away.
"Noah, I don't know."
his brows knit together. he was getting angry.
"what do you mean Calliope?"
"I mean I don't know if this is a great idea. us being together. look at us, Noah. we can't even have sex because I get too nervous. we're destroying my little sister's heart. you don't even talk to Lee."
"exactly! you'd think since I've fought tooth and damn nail for this thing that isn't even a relationship, and you're so willing to just throw it all away like it's nothing. like we haven't been best friends since we were born."
"Noah, I don't wanna throw away everything. I still wanna be your best friend. just without the benefits part. it doesn't sound like such a great idea anymore. my dad doesn't like the way I'm treating Elle and it scares Brad."
he shook his head. "I can't believe this."
"Noah, I'm serious. I'm so sorry."
he stood up. "bye, Callie."

I stood at the table, hands shaking, legs weak.
I thought about what my mom told me once. we were at a diner, eating burgers like we always did every other Saturday for lunch. just the two of us.
"calliope, there's gonna be a day where you and Noah both start thinking 'woah, we're a guy and a girl, best friends, let's see if there's something more. and if you get the slightest feeling it's not going the way it should, cut it off. don't ever think he's the only one that's gonna love you, babygirl, because there's gonna be guys that will. and some of them will break your heart and Noah will break their nose. don't give Noah the romance chance until the time is right."
I smiled at the thought.
