I had spent the night in the centre of London with a group of friends as a little celebration. Maddie, one of my oldest and best friends, had gotten engaged the previous week. It was nice to see them all as I had moved away to London a year ago now and I didn't get to see them half as much as I would like to.
Our evening had started off with dinner in Soho and then we ended up going out for drinks at a nearby bar. We had a brilliant night, that involved me losing my rather expensive leather jacket. It wasn't until Michelle, one of my other oldest friends, needed help getting back onto her bar stool after some rather outrageous dancing by herself that we decided to call it a night. It took us a long time to find a taxi rank, but when we did Maddie and the other girls, Sam and Vicky, helped Michelle into a taxi and they went off to their hotel. I waved them off and eventually I got into my own cab and headed to my apartment.
It was about a twenty-five minute journey in the taxi and I had just about managed to stay awake in the back when we pulled up to my apartment block. I thanked the driver, paid the fare and got out. I walked carefully up the stone steps out the front of the building in my tan heels and let myself in, carrying on up the stairs to the top floor apartment that I shared with Tom, who had been my boyfriend for just over two years.
As I reached the top of the stairs I checked my watch. Holy crap! How was it almost 5am?! I didn't realise it was that late! I had told Tom that I wasn't going to be late and that I'd definitely be home by midnight. I pulled my mobile phone out of my bronze sequinned clutch bag and saw that I had eleven missed calls and four text messages:
Ring me back please x x
Where are you? X x
You said midnight, it's just gone one and I haven't heard from you... X
Come on, it's gone two now! I've had enough. I'm going to bed.
Oops! Looks like I'm going to be sleeping on the sofa tonight so I don't wake him up! I got to the door and rummaged around in my bag for my key. Great, it was in my jacket! Now I'm really in trouble.
I knocked on the door but there was no answer. I knocked a bit harder and I put my ear against the door. I could hear movement inside.
'Tom,' I called, 'I've lost my key. I'm sorry I missed your calls, I lost track of time.'
There was no response.
'Tom, please,' I tried again, 'I didn't realise the time. It took me ages to get a cab, I've lost my jacket with my key in. Please baby.'
This situation was definitely not helped by the fact that I had clearly been drinking as I swayed a little outside the closed door.
I could hear shuffling around on the other side of the door now so I knew he was there.
'Toommmmm,' I whined, 'Open the door.'
As there was still no reply from the other side I bent down to look under the gap at the bottom of the door. I could see a light and hear a muffled sound: The TV.
'I can hear the TV Tom, come on. I said I'm sorry,' I said, now feeling kind of angry that he wasn't letting me in, 'I'm not sleeping on the floor out here.'
Becoming increasingly desperate I slowly pushed myself back up to stand.
'Tom, I pay for the rent on this place too. It might not be as much as you but I do. I cook, I clean... You can't leave me out here... I'm going to kick the door down if soon if you don't let me in.'
I knocked on the door again, but a lot louder this time.
'Tom, this isn't funny. Let me in or... I'll call the Police.'
I heard a very faint laugh from the other side of the door.
'Tom? I can hear you!'
At that point the door I heard the lock and bolt being undone from the other side. So even if I did have my key I wouldn't have been able to get in. He actually locked me out!
The door opened a tiny bit and I could just see his eye peering through the gap.
'I think you've been punished enough,' Tom said, opening the door up fully to reveal his smiling.
'I can't believe you locked me out!' I said, surprised but smiling.
'I can't believe it's 5am, but here we are,' he laughed.
'I'm sorry. I honestly had no idea what the time was. We just kept talking...'
'Come on,' Tom interrupted, taking my hand, 'I'll make you a hot chocolate while you have a shower.'
Tom kissed me on the side of the head as I walked in, with him closing and locking the door - behind me his time.
