"What are you doing?" I questioned while still a little in shock.

"What does it look like, sweetheart?" He questioned as he took a seat opposite me. My heart sped up, from fear or excitement or perhaps something else, I couldn't tell why. No words left my lips as I tried to speak but he didn't care. He moved to rest his hands on the table before he slid my sheet of paper towards him.

"Your drawings are adorable, sweetheart." His eyes never left my paper but the compliment was genuine. "Let me buy you a coffee, I'd love to get to know you." The request came as a surprise but I decided to agree. Nothing wrong with having a coffee somewhere public. We sat in silence as we waited for our drinks, every so often I would go back to my drawing but feeling his gaze on me made it difficult to focus.

"Have you been stalking me?" I blurted out as our coffees were brought to the table. Wendy, the barrister, gave me a quick concern glance as she placed the drinks down. A reassuring smile washed over my face, she nodded acknowledging it before walking away.

"No, I haven't, our paths just happened to cross a few times." Hurt washed over his face for a split second before going back to normal. "You're more than welcome to tell me to fuck off and I'll never bother you again." He laughed as he spoke but there was a twinge of disappointment in his tone.

"No it's ok for now, you seem nice enough." I giggled after I finished talking which made him smile too. A comfortable silence filled the air for a few moments before we slipped into general conversation.

By the time the clock on the cafe wall dinged, signalling noon, our cups were empty and we were brought back to the world around us. Being lost in pleasant conversation is not something I was particularly used to, disappointment could probably be heard in my voice as we said our goodbyes. As I packed up my things I noticed something had been written on the back of my drawing; a phone number along with a name, William. A gentle twinge warmed my heart as a little smile spread across my lips; I knew better than to get my hopes up so soon though.

The rest of the day was spent in a fuzzy warmth as I went through my usual routine; work, dinner, a bit of tv, then bed. However, sleeping tonight was proving more difficult than normal, thoughts of William crossed my mind every few seconds. One reoccurring thought happened to be about texting him, not for anything particular, just to chat. I toyed with the temptation for a while before settling on a decision. The light from my phone stung my eyes for a minute until I adjusted. Sentence after sentence I erased trying to find the right words to send, what I finally sent was a dismal 'Hey'. Honestly, I thought I wouldn't get a reply, considering it was nearly midnight, but when my phone buzzed gently in my hand I was pleasantly surprised.

*Can't sleep sweetheart?*

*I can't, why are you awake?*

*Work, as per usual. Would you like me to ring you?* Another surprise request, another I agreed to. We ended up talking on the phone until I drifted off to sleep, something I hadn't done before but something I quite enjoyed. His voice was soft and calming, an advantage for sending me to sleep, we didn't speak about anything of meaning. Often there would just be a comfortable silence over the phone, it must have been one of those that I drifted off in.
