I was young when my mom was killed. Seven years old with a mother that worked all day and slept all night just so she could get up and do it all again. I never knew my father, my mother always said he would be back for me one day, but he never came. I remember that night to the smallest detail. My mother had just got home from working at the Mexican restaurant across town. When she opened the door I ran to her and gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She was wearing a pink T-shirt and a pair of holey blue jeans, you could see she was exhausted by the dark circles under her eyes and the way she moved. One thing I remember I loved about her after she got home from work is that she smelled like enchiladas and taco sauce. She picked me up and twirled me around in the air and sat me back down on my feet. "How was your day cutie pie?" , She asked while walking over to her favorite chair. "It was great! I played outside with Gerald all day and we found a beetle and named him Percy!" Gerald was my closest friend, living just two houses away. Her eyes widened and she started grinning. "Wow! And what did you do with Percy? You didn't let him loose in the house like you did your last pet bug, did you?" I went over to her and sat on her lap, "No!" I started laughing. "I let him go outside so he could eat all the grass he wanted!" My mother sighed and she patted my little legs. "I'm hungry little man, do you want lefto-" there was a bang on the door, and then another a few seconds after that. My mother grabbed me in her arms, I buried my head deep into her shoulder and she ran into our room and put me in the closet. "You have to listen to me little man. No matter what you hear, do NOT come out of this closet, do you understand me?" I nodded my head yes while tears where running down my face, something was obviously wrong but I didn't know what. She looked at the door and back at me. "I love you, Alex." After she said my name she kissed me on the forehead and went to close the closet door, but she couldn't, something was holding it open, My hand had reached up for the door and stopped it from closing and I stood up and hugged her tightly, " I love you too, mommy" I heard another bang, it was louder than the others and I heard a mans voice calling out, "maria! Carlos wants his money!" I felt warm teardrops sliding down my back. She whispered with a sob, "Stay here." And shoved me into the closet and shut the door. I heard the bedroom door slam and my mother screaming, "just give me another week! I'll have his money, I just don't have it now!" Then the man spoke, " I'm sorry but the boss wants it today, I'm sorry I have to do this…" I heard three gunshots and a weak scream from my mother. I waited a few seconds and then I heard our front door slam. I didn't know what had happened at the time but I couldn't stop crying, I was sobbing so loud I swear the neighbors could hear me. After 10 minutes or so I heard sirens and men entering the house. I was still sobbing so I couldn't makeout what they where saying. I heard footsteps running into the room and I saw the doorknob turning and a lady wearing a blue and black police uniform grabbed me and held me in her arms and started walking out of the bedroom and into the hallway, but before we walked out of the door she stopped and looked at me and said her name was private Blackburn and that she was here to help. She told me that I needed to be strong and close my eyes until we got to her police car. She picked me up again but I didn't close my eyes, I wanted to now what happened to my mom. As we walked out of the bedroom I saw my mothers limp body surrounded by three police officers, there was a pool of blood surrounding her and three bloody holes in her pink shirt. She had a terrified look on her face and was looking towards the bedroom door with a arm and extended toward the door. I started screaming and kicking, "MOMMY! LET ME GO SEE MY MOMMY!" Private Blackburn quickened her pace and buried my head into her shoulder, and ran out the door and to her police cruiser, i was still kicking and screaming for my mom. She carried me to the passenger seat and Sat me down. She kneeled down to where we where face to face and she said, "what's your name sweetie?" I didn't reply for a few seconds, then I managed to spit it out between sobs. " my name is Alex, why was mommy lying on the floor?" Private Blackburn started crying softly. I wrapped my arms around her in an embrace, "it will be OK, when my mommy wakes up she'll make some lemonade and kiss your forehead, that always makes me stop crying."
