Jesse stared at the gym doorway and rapidly tapped her foot. She had been waiting on Petra to come save her from this party for over an hour... She wasn't coming, was she? Of course not. Jesse rolled her eyes at herself for being so stupid and checked her phone once again.
"Where are you???" Her last text to Petra read. Jesse could see that Petra saw it...but she didn't reply. Was she okay? Did she not wanna come? Did she not like Jesse anymore? Did she even like Jesse in the first place? Did she just not care? Jesse felt tears attempting to break out of her eyes as her thoughts flew in all different directions. She sprang up from her seat and discreetly sped walked to the bathroom. After taking a few deep breaths as she checked the stalls to make sure no one would hear her, Jesse locked herself in the first stall and let it all go. She'd had so many people leave her... Her best friend told her she was a backstabbing bitch...and a slut. She couldn't lose Petra too... She wouldn't survive it. Suddenly, Jesse heard the bathroom door fly open and the sound of a baby's cry fill the echoey space.
"Oh, my gosh!" She exclaimed in a whisper, immediately halting her mental breakdown. She forced her back up against the stall door and used it to push herself off the ground until her feet were resting on the toilet lid, out of sight. She used the coat hanger on the door as a stress reliever/extra anchor as she listened to a soft spoken woman console herself and the baby.
"Sh, it's okay." She told it.
"I'm sorry there's so many people. It stresses me out too..." The woman shushed the baby again as she sniffled and...maybe wiped a tear away. Jesse noticed something familiar about that voice... Just as she leaned a little closer, Jesse's foot slipped and hit the floor with a slam.
"Holy crap!" She blurted out in a whisper, pulling her foot back onto the toilet like it was never down.
"Who's there? Watch the language around the baby!" The woman walked up to the stall.
"Oh, please. I just said 'crap'." Jesse rolled her eyes, not moving other than that.
"Why are you up there?" The woman asked, her voice fluctuating from bouncing the baby.
"I... It doesn't matter." Jesse leaped down, rapidly unlocked the stall, and walked towards the door, not thinking to even look at the woman.
"Wait! Before you go could you help me please?" The woman took a step closer to her.
"I don't know anything about babies." Jesse went to open the door but was stopped once again.
"It doesn't matter. I do. That's not really what I meant though. Do you know where Ocelot Dr. is?"
"Y-Yes. Why?" Jesse responded, her voice still shaking from crying.
"I...heh, I got a little lost on my way home...do you think you could-"
"Yeah, any excuse to get outta here." Jesse whirled around to look at the lady but she wasn't as "womanly" as she thought...she was a girl, about Jesse's age. Maybe a little older.
"This is my baby sister, Rue. Short for Ruebene. I'm Lukah." The girl extended her hand.
"Jesse. Jesse Taber." She shook Lukah's hand.
"Nice to meet you, Jesse." Lukah giggled. "Can you, uh...take the baby for a second? I just need to wash my hands."
"Oh, uh...yeah." Jesse hesitatingly took the baby from her, desperately trying not to embarrass herself.
Wow...she's kinda pretty. Jesse thought to herself as she watched Lukah examine herself in the mirror...and she was right. Lukah had beautiful, long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She wore a black leather jacket with a subtle design on the back, blue jeans, and a striped shirt. Jesse couldn't help but stare at her as she continued to care for the baby. But what was wrong with that? Petra ditched her. She was already going to get into a fight with her about that. What was wrong with walking a pretty, lost girl home?
Nothing. Jesse consciously decided. There's nothing wrong with it.
Lukah took Rue back from Jesse and left the bathroom. On the way to Lukah's house, Lukah and Jesse really got to know each other. Lukah told Jesse about how she had just moved to Beacontwon from Champion City and was still learning her way around. Jesse told Lukah about how Petra ditched her and about how Jesse was super scared of crowds... Lukah giggled at that...
"Oh..." Lukah giggled and tucked a hair behind her ear as her hand accidentally touched Jesse's, blushing like crazy.
"Sorry..." Jesse looked at the ground, blushing even harder than Lukah.
"It's fine." Lukah took a deep breath before taking Jesse's hand in hers. "Is this okay?"
"Yeah." Jesse interlaced their fingers. "More than okay."
(10 minutes of adorable handholding and "get-to-know-you" conversation later)
"Oh, uh, this is me." Lukah pointed to an average wooden house, big enough for a family of four.
"I, uh...had a better time with you than I would've at that party, so...thanks" Jesse casually let go of Lukah's hand.
"Well, if you ever need rescued again.." Lukah handed her a small piece of paper.
"Your number?" Jesse looked at her.
"Well I don't see why not." Lukah shrugged.
"Heh...thanks."
"Well I'll, uh...see you later, Jesse." Lukah gave Jesse's hand one last squeeze before disappearing into the house with her sister.
"See you later, Lukah..." Jesse whispered and subtly waved before beginning her journey home...she had a lot of thinking to do...
