Jane

This wasn't happening. It's a joke. Maybe I had made some weird mistakes and bought the test meant as a prank. This couldn't be happening.

"Jane? What does it say?" Rebecca calls from outside.

My hands won't stop shaking. Why won't they stop shaking? My phone alarm goes off for me to leave for work. I open the door quickly, only to see my three flatmates with their ears pressed against the door.

"So?" They ask almost in unison.

"I-I have a shift, I need to go."

"Jane! You can't just tell me to go buy you a pregnancy test and then not tell me the results."

I walk into my room and slam the door shut, thankful to have the piece of wood blocking their questions. I slide down to the floor, putting my head in my hands.

"Shit." I whisper. How did this happen?

I mean, I know how it happened, I was there. But today started out like every other day until that stupid app gave me a notification.

I had just been making breakfast, listening to the preppy new news anchor talk about her upcoming wedding, when my phone went off. I walked over to the glowing block and picked it up.

"Your period started last week; why not take a few minutes to update how it's going?" The perky notification stated.

My period had not in fact started last week. My period hadn't started at all.

"Rebecca? Rebecca!" I yell through the small apartment.

"What, Jesus, what?" She closes the door, obviously trying to keep her current suitor asleep.

"I'm late." I say softly.

"You're late? For what, work?"

"No, no. M-my period. I'm a week late."

Her eyes grew. "My little Janey. The biggest virgin in the world is late. Who did you even have sex with?"

I blush. "Luke," I whisper. "I was drunk."

"Luke? The one who's asleep on our couch right now?" She whisper yelled. I drag her into the bathroom, not wanting to wake anyone up with my bad news.

"Shh!" I hush her, locking the door. "He's the only one it could be."

Luke had been my friend for 2 years now. I had just moved to Alaska and was already lost, looking for my house, on a street full of houses that all look the same. Luke helped me get in and helped me move the boxes that night.

Then he got me drunk. Then he kissed me. Then I woke up, confused, with a bad hangover and a very naked Luke in my bed.

"Did you take a test?" She asked, breaking me out of my thoughts.

"No, not yet." I say softly.

"I'll go get you the test. I'll be back in 10 minutes. You should probably wake up your baby daddy." She leaves.

I take a few minutes afterward. How did this happen? I was so careful. I had made sure he wore protection. Didn't I?

"Jane? Where are you?" Luke calls from the living room. I put on a smile and leave the bathroom and go out to Luke, finishing the breakfast I had started, shirtless.

No, I didn't have a crush on him. At least that's what I had to tell myself. I didn't have time to have a crush on him. Especially if we had a baby together. I had to focus on the baby, not my growing feelings for him.
