Jane

The cold jelly was wiped off my stomach as I sheepishly pulled my shirt down. Luke looked focused on the ultrasound monitor, determined not to look at my stomach.

"You can look now." I laugh softly as his cheeks turn red.

"I know I've already seen you-you know," He stammers. "It's just-I mean-well I dunno I just-" His whole face manages to turn bright strawberry red.

"It's ok, love don't worry." I smile and he kisses my forehead softly.

"Well, there are your pictures and you can just go ahead and pay at the front desk." The doctor smiles at us as she backs out the door. I sigh and try to do the calculations on how much this would set me back.

I fish around in my wallet to find my card and get ready to hand it to the receptionist before Luke beats me to it.

"I could've gotten it, I'm getting a new gig soon, so I can pay you back." I lean into him gently. He stays quiet all the way to the car, making me nervous. "Are you ok?"

He takes a deep breath and rubs his eyes. "What are we?" He blurts out loudly. My eyes widen.

I had never even thought of that. I mean he got me pregnant, told me he liked me, moved me into his house and now we barely see each other besides in the morning, when he picked me up from ultrasounds, and at night when he pulls me close. I had never thought anything more would happen at this point until the other night.

It had been a pretty normal night with me being half asleep before he got home and him pulling me closer. He was rubbing his hands up and down my body when he whispered that one phrase that made my breath catch in my throat.

"I think I love you."

What could I do? I didn't move, I just pretended to stay asleep so it would all go away. Now here I am listening to Luke be distressed in the driver seat.

"W-What do you mean?" I ask softly, picking at my nails.

"I get you pregnant, you move in with me, and then you stop talking to me. I've got other girls that I could be with Janey and it won't take much for me to get a dinner date set up with those girls." He bursts. I look out the window, the tears welling up in my eyes.

"T-Then you should," I start, my voice cracking and giving me away that the tears were on their way. I drop down to a whisper. "It's unfair of me to do this to you." I look everywhere except for him.

"Jane...Janey," His voice lowers from the yell. "I-I didn't mean to-I shouldn't have yelled, babe I'm sorry, hey don't cry. We can-"

"Please let's go home, I-I'll move all of my stuff into the guest room. Or back into Rebecca's if you want or I dunno." I cut him off.

The car starts and we leave the office.

The next night Luke comes downstairs as I'm folding his laundry. He looks in the mirror in the hall and fixes the tie he's matched to his blue button-up shirt and grey dress pants.

"You look nice. Big date?" I joke before it hits me. "Oh...you're really going on a date." I whisper.

"Uhm...yeah. Do you know Kendra down the street? We're going out for dinner and then probably dancing. You don't have to wait up or anything." He grabs his wallet and keys and shuts the doors softly.

I grab my phone dialing Rebecca. "H-He's on a date." I choke out through sobs. "He left on a date." There were soon knocks on the door and Rebecca held up a handful of movies.
