One would say running was exhilarating, relaxing at most. That's only when you run for fun, or to alleviate stress, not running for your life. That is when you are most stress and scared. You never want to stop running once your adrenaline starts pumping, you feel your heart rate increase along with your breathing. All you hear is the blood pumping. Everything else seems quiet. Everything is blurry, all you can focus on is running. Your instincts play a part in that. Flight or fight. Most people say they would stay and fight until they are actually in that situation and they are the first to run away.

Alex and Noah ran until their legs gave out from underneath them. The night was turning morning. The sky was orange and the sun was rising. Falling to the ground, the two boys rested against a random wall. Heaving, trying to catch their breath, the boys looked at each other and coughed out a laugh. The two boys laughed at how a night can turn bad instantly. Laughed at how a simple action can change a person's future instantly. As quickly as they laughed the two boys were crying, both feeling each other's emotions and pain. Alex reached over and pulled the other boy close, and they sat on the sidewalk crying over the lives that were lost together.

Neither one of them wanted to speak about what had just happened. They just wanted to shower and sleep. Standing up, Noah reached out and grabbed onto Alex to help him stand up. "Let's go to a motel. You stink."

"So do you, bitch." Alex grumbled and started to walk, "There is a motel a block away from here."

"How do you know this stuff? Do you just memorize maps for the fun of it?" Noah asked making a face.  Shrugging, Alex took Noah's hand and pulled him towards the direction of the motel. Once it was in sight, Alex let go of Noah's hand and walked faster to the motel.

Walking in the two boys were greeted by an old woman and the smell of freshly baked pastries. Both of their stomachs rumbled loudly as they approached the front desk.

"Hello there. Room for two?" The old lady asked smiling at them.

"Yes please," Alex said, looking around the room.

"Double or single beds?" The lady asked as she typed into the computer.

Looking at Noah, Alex said without missing a heartbeat," double."

"Single, please," Noah said as he started to dig for some cash to pay for the night, not noticing the old woman making a face. Eventually, he found the wad of cash and handed a 20 dollar bill to the woman for a set of keys.

On the way out both of the boys grabbed handfuls of the baked goods and walked up the stairs to their room while stuffing their faces. Looking at Alex, Noah laughed at the frosting that covered the corner of his mouth. Tilting his head, Alex caught a sight of his reflection in one of the windows. "Well, that's a waste of good frosting. Can you get it off?" Nodding his head slowly, Noah licked his index finger and brought it up to Alex's face and swiped it over the frosting bit, getting rid of any sign that there were any on his face.

Shaking his head, Noah quickly backed away and unlocked the door to their room, and walked in. "I call the shower first."

"Fine, I'll just keep eating," Alex said, jumping onto his bed, pulling out his phone.

Walking into the bathroom, Noah threw his bag into the sink and stripped of his clothing. Turning on the shower to the warmest setting it had, he waited for it to heat up. After a couple of minutes, he placed a hand under the water, once he felt a perfect temperature, he got in under the water. Sighing as the water cascaded down his body, Noah started to cry. He sat on the ground and laid his head against the wall and cried. Finally allowing himself to feel the grief of losing his father fully.

After what seemed like forever he got up and grabbed some of the shampoo that the motel provided and slathered it on his head. Closing his eyes, he washed it from his head and washed his body before getting out of the shower. After drying off, Noah got dressed and opened the bathroom door, and fell back onto the bed. "It's your turn now."

"Fucking finally. You took forever." Alex jumped from the bed and practically ran to the bathroom.

"No, I didn't!" Noah yelled as he threw a pillow at Alex just as he shut the bathroom door. Shaking his head at his friend, Noah laid back down and closed his eyes, and felt himself drift off into sleep.

Walking back into the room, Alex smiled at a sleeping Noah and picked up the pillow that had been thrown and hit Noah with it. Jumping up, Noah glared at Alex, "What the everlasting fuck was that for?"

"I felt like it, and I figured we sleep today and talk about what just happened last night when we wake up." Alex shrugged laying on his bed and getting under his covers.

"That sounds definitely like a plan to me, cause I need to sleep." Noah sighed, "Just to get my head on straight."

Both boys laid in silence, as the sunlight hardly passed through the curtains that were on the windows. They listened to the outside world go on without knowing what just happened to the two boys. They two boys did not feel safe anymore, they suddenly felt all grown up, but so young at the same time.

After not being able to sleep, Noah got up from his head and saw that Alex was fast asleep, so he picked up the covers that were on Alex's bed and got under them, cuddling into his chest. Not long after he fell into a peaceful sleep, smiling Alex opened his eyes and pulled Noah closer and kissed his head before closing his eyes again and truly falling asleep this time. Both boys feeling a little bit safer than before.
