He drove and drove trying to get away  from them, the bodies, the hovering bodies...

Alexander didn't know why, nor could he figure out why all this seemed to be happening to him.He was a fairly decent person, or so he thought anyways, so why had the bodies appeared?

He tried hiding, and so far that had worked out in his favor, so far at least. He stayed inside, worked from home and ordered whatever he needed online. Though, as of late, things seemed to be getting worse. He could hear the constant moaning, wheezing and often heavy breathing come from outside his door and windows, the bodies of course. Even with music or the TV going, he could still occasionally hear them.  He could feel their hollow gazes stare at him, even though that part was impossible, no one could see in and he couldn't see out.  The boards on the windows and the heavily locked and blocked door made it seem like he was safe, but he was never really safe, he knew that.

He knew with everything getting progressively worse that something had to change. He knew he would have to go somewhere, and soon. That somewhere had to be the safest and most secure place he could think of. That place, was The Fortress. The Fortress was a lake cabin where he spent the summers growing up. The cabin itself was pretty secure and secluded, but the place he was more focused on was the bunker just outside the cabin. Looking back at all the times he made fun of that old bunker, he sure was glad to be able to have access to it now. He had made up his mind, he was going to The Fortress. Hoping it will save his sanity, and his life.

He got some of his things together. A few necessities he knew he would need and that were not out there already. He threw a few shirts and some pants into his worn denim duffel and ran to the bathroom to grab his pouch with his toothbrush, comb, deodorant and toothpaste. He threw that pouch into the duffel and zipped it up and set it by the door.  Walking into the kitchen he grabbed his water purifying tablets, he remembered his father warning him about the musty lake water as a kid, he shook the memory free from his mind and went to put those in the bag as well. Double checking he had everything he glanced around the small studio once more, eyeing his grandfathers fleece throw that had been gifted to him before his grandfather's passing, he grabbed that, his coat and keys and was going to head out. He put on his coat and clutched the keys in his hand, with his bag on his shoulder he proceeded to open the door and step out into the stagnant  hallway of  his apartment building. The door slammed behind him, causing him to jump straight out of his skin and let out a school girlish squeal. He had forgotten about the resistance spring he has installed on the top corner of the door. He shook his head, let out a nervous chuckle that was not fooling anyone, and made his way down the hallway toward the empty stairwell. The old building had no elevators, not that he would take one of those death traps anyway, but he may have if the situation presented itself, which it hadn't thankfully.

The closer Alexander got to the stairwell, the more he could feel the piercing stare of eyes upon him, more so than he normally felt.  Once he had made his way to the stairs, after which seemed like a lifetime, he felt nauseous. He peered down into the shadowy stairwell, took a breath and rushed down them as quickly as his legs would allow without taking a tumble down the stairs. Now just to make it to the car and out of this godforsaken city.

Getting to his car he loaded his things into the back seat. As he shut the door he felt an icy breath on the back of his neck. Alexander spun around and came face to face with....nothing... there was nothing there but a haze of darkness. Then the nothingness was all around him, he was in the nothingness, he wasn't sure, he was confused. Then he saw them, the bodies, hovering just above his head and all around him. Before he knew what was happening he was screaming, and loudly. He shut his eyes, took a few deep breaths and then slowly opened his eyes again. They were gone, the black nothingness was gone and he was still, as he hoped he had always been, by his car. He opened the drivers door got in, slammed the door shut, started the car and sped off out of the parking garage not as quickly as he would have wanted. As he drove, recklessly and barreling down the streets something caught his eye. The bodies, they were above the street and above almost all of the buildings. They were sparse but still very much there. As he came to the edge of the city he took a deep breath, he made it out, things should get better, right? Wrong.

The further away from the city he got, the more dense the hovering bodies became. This was all wrong, it was supposed to get better once he left the city, the city is where they were. No, No, NO!!! This was all wrong. An overwhelming feeling of dread washed through Alexanders entire body, this cant be happening.  He sped up. He drove faster and faster and faster, but the faster he drove further and further from the city, the more the sky filled with the bodies.

He screeched to a stop. He sat there, staring out his windshield up at the hovering bodies. He couldn't escape, they wouldn't let him. He slowly opened the car door. He carefully stepped out on to the muddy, puddled road, out into the stagnant dusk. Standing there, in between a partially opened door and his car, he stared up at them, still as stone. They all seemed to be staring at him, but through him at the same time, if that were even possible.  Then, one seemed to be slowly descending towards him. The closer it got to him, the less he found himself breathing and the more still he became. Getting nearer, the shadow from the body slowly lifted. As it got right in front of him, Alexander gasped in fright and stared wide eyed at the body. He couldn't believe it, and didn't know how to react. The body hovering slightly in front of him, was him! The Body Alexander was looking at, was himself!!

Days later a couple driving down that road found a car, driver door open, bags in the back and no one in sight.
