The smell of the sea had grown so familiar. The bright stars dazzled above me like diamonds. I had never been so alone, yet so calm. And finally, after losing everything and everyone, I found it. It was almost worth it.
I never would’ve imagined I would find it. And I never would’ve imagined it could be this beautiful. So serene and quiet. It seemed too unreal. What is the word? Hypnotic? Illusory? Otherworldly? Surreal. Everything was spinning, it felt as if time slowed down. Almost like the world stopped, and I was the only one aware.
The ocean rushed over the side, eager to reach the stars all around. However, the water didn’t seem to function as an ordinary waterfall. It was spectacular, the way the sparkling water splashed up and dispersed up to the moon and faded out. The water formed an inclination, as if I could sail up to the stars. The waves washed out; they seemed to disintegrate.
The ocean broke off into the sky. I could see where the edge laid as my knarr grew closer. She slowly drifted with the natural current.
Where I thought the waves would raise me up, the ship began to tip forward. A gentle wobble on the edge of the world. My calm feeling was slowly replaced with an uneasiness. Then I felt afraid.
Alone. I’m alone. No crew. Nobody around to witness my disappearance. Nobody around to witness my adventure. I will never be able to tell my story. I will never be able to tell the story of the brave sailors that assisted me on this voyage.
I desperately ran to the stern. I tried to yell out, but I made no sound. It was so quiet. Deadly silent. I uncontrollably floated up from my ship. My grip on the sail grew tighter, but it was no match to the force pulling me. My hand slipped and let go, struggling for my life. But it was no use. I was drifting further into space as I watched my knarr disappear.
The smell of the salty sea hurt my nostrils, as if it burned the inside of my nose. My chest was collapsing. A compressing feeling in my lungs. It was getting harder to breath. Every inch of my body was aching, as if my insides were on fire. I felt like my limbs were being stretched slowly in every direction. My vision became blurry. The sights were no longer beautiful. They were becoming more and more terrifying as I drifted closer to space.
The man on the moon glared down at me. I caught a glimpse of the heavens. It wasn’t as beautiful as I was told. Maybe we think it’s beautiful because the entrance appears that way. The beauty of the stars and the sea meeting, lined with colors and lights. But this wasn’t reality; it was truly hellish.
