Chapter 3:
The past week had gone in a rush, but it's finally Friday. I'm caught up on all of my assignments and reading, which I read extra, just to make my workload next week easier. College has been everything I needed it to be. My whole life, I've done things to satisfy other people, but this choice was mine. My uncle had been extremely mad when he found out I was going to Richmond for school. He was mad at the simple fact that I was choosing where I wanted to go, and didn't listen to him about the high crime rate and how it's not really a campus. He's good at putting people down. If it's not his way, every other way is wrong.
The one thing that does burden my mind, is the fact that my brother is still there with the asshole. You see, my uncle had this tendancy to blame other people for stuff, and my brother was prime suspect for everything. He yelled at his wife? Seth. He hit his wife? Seth. He hit or yelled at Seth? Seth was forcing him to do it. The rareity that I'd get in trouble? Oh, it was Seth. He's a big boy for 17, but him going to weightlifting for football only fuels the fire for my uncle. He thinks everyone is trying to challenge him. So, we all learned to bow our head, and tell him what he wants to hear..Even if it's a lie.
I layed in bed thinking of everything in my life up until this point. I discover that I'm finally content with life. Things don't revolve around my uncle, and I don't have to get nervous over him getting mad or drinking. My brother can leave this year, so that thought really helps me get through.
........
Around noon, Hannah and me were walking through the city, just exploring. We decided to stop for some icecream.
"So what about Alex?" Hannah said as we sat down with our cones.
Not again. "Who?" I decided to play dumb.
"Jade." She rolled her eyes.
"There's nothing to talk about. I haven't seen him since the show. I'm not interested." The sane part of myself isn't interested.
"You have more self-restraint than me." She said while wiggling her eyebrows and we both laughed.
"I believe that with all of my heart."
I got up to throw away the excess when I felt someone slam into me. The girl who was running didn't even stop to say sorry.
"What th--" I said as I felt hands go around my waist to prevent me from falling. Why do I keep falling?
I looked up into my rescuer's eyes. Green eyes. Dark hair. Dark clothing. Alex.
I regained my balance quickly and backed about a foot away. He stood there with that same cocky grin he had the other night.
"Thanks" I said quietly.
He stepped up to me and whispered in my ear. "Well that wasn't how I imagined my hands around your waist, but it'll do for now."
I just stepped back and looked at him, "I'm sorry, but I'm really not interested. Go waste your time with someone willing."
He laughed and said, "We'll see." Then simply turned on his heels and walked away.
I walked back to the table where Hannah sat with a huge smile on her face. She stood up and we both headed back to the dorm.
Hannah busted out laughing. Over Alex, I'm sure.
"Nothing huh?"
I looked out of the corner of my eye, "Oh my god," I laughed, "Nothing!"
..........
Later that night, Hannah had a date with Chris. I can't say I didn't see that coming. They claimed to be just friends, but I guessed otherwise. I helped her curl her hair while she did her makeup. I usually don't put on much, but she lets me borrow some of hers. I'm super thankful we both get along, because I couldn't imagine being stuck in a dorm room with someone who secretly hated me. Or vice versa.
