He knew he had to act quickly. He was terrified, scared even. Eaves-dropping on a colleagues phone call sounded really wrong but now he understood why the whispers behind the door attracted him.
7:55
He still had about 5minutes more. His stubby legs felt heavier with each burdened step. He remembered how they all looked down on him at the police academy because of his body build. They called him "fat and useless" ..it all made sense now.
He'd been asking himself why he was partnered with Jubril on this very important investigation.
The DSS or higher security operatives should have been in charge.
He just saw it now. It was all planned. Jubril was their insider while he was just a prop, something fancy, a puppet, something to make it all look like there's nothing wrong.7: 57
He asked himself time and again why Jubril insisted on placing the witness in a holding cell. He remembered the soft sobs that escaped from the girl's mouth after they caught her while she was trying to run away. He had a daughter about her age too. Had. His daughter had just died a few weeks ago.
7:58
He tried speeding up. They already called him "fat and useless" but he was going to prove them wrong. He was going to perform his duties as an officer of the law and protect that girl. He was sure that he heard Jubril.
"We'll take the witness out by 8:00pm Chief".
The edge in his voice accentuated the fact that he was definitely not taking her out for a fun trip.
7:59
He made it! but there was less than a minute left. He started fiddling with the locks of the cell door as quickly as he could. Through the partial darkness, he could see her eyes watching him.
"Young lady, we need to leave now!"
"I don't want to go anywhere"
"Your life is in danger!"
"That's just the way it ought to be", she said and yawned.
He couldn't keep standing there, he dragged her up by the arm and started walking out as fast as he could.
The girl seemed to have forgotten her protest earlier and picked up his pace.As they ran-walked, she asked, "where are you taking me?"
After a few more feets, he paused and spoke, "across this street, there is a ram market. The lorry that conveys rams to the southern part of the country will be there around this time. I want to make sure you..."
His speech was interrupted by voices in the distance.
"Quick! Jump inside that empty barrel beside you and stay down", he ordered her.
The girl was finding it a bit difficult so he tried helping her into it. As he did, he found out that the girl's feet were bleeding and she had no shoes on so he began to take off his boots to give to her.
"What is going on?", she whispered.
He handed her his shoes and said "you can keep them"
"I said what is going on?!", before he could clasp a palm over her mouth, the voices that were coming from a distance before sounded closer and flashlights were shone in their direction.
She lay low in the barrel while he started moving forward to meet the voices.
He hadn't moved two steps when he heard Jubril's voice, "where is the girl?"
"What girl?", he answered."Don't play games with me"
"She was already gone before I got to her cell this evening"
"You are really fat and useless. Take him out", Jubril said to one of the men with him.
Where she crouched, she heard two bullets escape their lethal encasement. Then everything around her went quiet again and the noise within her just began to start.
It was a tiny noisy voice, "Do you wanna be a sowmen, come run less go and play!..."
