The sky was grey. Was it going to rain?
Kazzaki watched as the clouds obstructed the moon from his view. A violent wind blew but he still sat outside. From inside he could hear the cheers and chants from the other guys. Was he excited, yes.
However, he was not happy. Today was the 15th of July again. Today was his birthday.
It'd been 3 years now. 3 years since he'd left home; since he "ran away".
He would always borrow Kay-Kay's old radio to listen to the evening news. He'd also steal newspapers from the vendor's shop too. Sadly, he didn't find what he was looking for.
He'd flip through every page looking to see his picture with the caption "missing boy" or "missing dwarf", he didn't mind as long as they were searching for him. He'd listen to the news reporters on the radio attentively to hear his name but it was never mentioned. They didn't want him. His parents weren't looking for him.A rain drop fell on Kazakki's fore-head. He knew he should be inside with the other guys celebrating their first big loot that he master-minded but another part of him felt cold and empty.
Over the years he had graduated quickly from petty thieving to purse snatching to motorcycle stealing. Tonight was the biggest so far. They'd robbed a superstore and gotten away with a lot of cash.
He could still remember the thrill he felt while holding a cutlass to the cashiers neck. He didn't want to kill the man but he enjoyed the thrill that being in authority gave him. He felt a swell in his heart for every bead of nervous sweat that ran down his face. He enjoyed the way his voice sounded as he reeled out threats into the poor man's ears.Oburo and Biggs were busy stashing the cash into the bag they'd brought. Spimo was on the roof watching out for the police while Kay-Kay, was playing loud music and the street and dancing to every beat to make sure no attention is given to the superstore.
When they were done with the whole operation, they asked the cashier for his car keys and sped to where they'd left their own truck.
In the day, they rode the garbage disposal trucks all around and by night, they operated. There was another rain drop, then another and even more. The rain brought back memories of that night. The night when he realized he was really not wanted.
He didn't go back inside their small hide-out for shelter against the rain. Instead, he cried. He cried for being born the way he was. He cried for every stare, for every pointed finger, for every loud whisper, for the nagging feeling of being unloved.
As he cried, he let the rain wash the tears away. This was going to be his last tear shedding exercise."Bros, wetin happen na?"
"How far you?"
He saw Kay-Kay and Spimo behind him with an umbrella.
He simply smiled."You came to enjoy the rain and you didn't call us. You dey craze?",Kay-Kay said, hitting Kazakki with his walking stick.
Sometimes, Kazakki wondered if he was really blind."Today is my birthday", he finally shouted.
This shout earned him series of slaps and knocks for not informing the gang.
"How old are you now?", Spimo asked.
"I'm 16 ", Kazakki said.
"I be your senior ooh", Kay-Kay said and smiled then he continued,
"If to say I know my mama, I for ask am which day dem born me",he said still smiling."Your mama no get sense. She throway fine pikin like you", Spimo said and hit Kay-Kay on the chest.
Kay-Kay laughed and hit Spimo too and said, "I better pass you sha, if to say you still dey that your papa house dem for don kill you finish".
Spimo laughed too and dropped the umbrella in his hand and took off his shirt. He turned to Kazakki to show him all the scars he'd gotten from his father and his father's wife. He got those scars because he was an illegitimate son.
At his lower back, there was a particular very big scar; his father's oldest child had used a hot knife to imprint the word;'BASTARD' on his body.As the rain kept falling on the three boys. They all started crying. Kay-Kay cried for being abandoned in a trash can after he was born. Spimo cried for the scars on his body and in his heart. Kazakki cried for being "abnormal".
Eventually, the rain reduced to tiny trickles and finally, it stopped. The moon seemed to smile above them as they all started to laugh at each other and console themselves. Spimo got the music box out and tried to get it to work but the thing refused to play any song so he started a chorus, "Able God!....shower your blessing, we want this money!....."
They all joined in the song and Kay-Kay started bursting moves on the wet sand. Oburo and Biggs came out from wherever they were to join in the fun.
A few mosquitoes and rats joined in too.Pidgin translation.
You dey craze- are you crazy?
I be your senior- I'm older than you are
If to say I know my mama....- if I had known who my mother was, I would have asked her about my date of birth.
Your mama no get sense- your mother is foolish.
She throway fine pikin like you- she threw away a fine child like you.
I better pass you sha....- I'm better than you anyway, if you were still in your father's house, you'd be dead by now.
Author's yarn: yeah, see what I did there? "Yarn"😁..okay, maybe that's just silly and not-too-funny...but "yarn" is the most suitable substitute for "note" in my personal pidgin English dictionary.
I'm sorry for the late update. I was a little busy😓.
So tell me, what is your favourite sport?
I don't do any sport because I'm too lazy for that but I think I like watching races. What about you?
