Stevie glared as bright sunlight filled the bus. She flipped down her sunglasses to cover her eyes, but the damage had been done: she was awake now.
To her right sat James, awake, and scrolling through his camera. To her left, a colourful sign past the window read:
WELCOME TO SPAIN-BIENVENIDO A ESPAÑA
The bus halted to a stop, and Stevie hopped off, suitcase in tow. James followed her sleepily, and they made their way to their respective rooms.
Stevie threw her suitcase on a sofa chair, and rifled through it, pulling out a pair of black high-top converse, a high-waisted black skirt, a 5SOS tank and sunglasses. She slipped them on, along with her black backpack.
The group walked out to breakfast, and decided to stop at a small café. Eating quickly, everyone wanted to go explore... and do some fun shit.
She and James headed out of the café, taking in the scenery. Stevie clung onto James' hand as they crossed a quiet street.
She looked up at her surroundings, and in the distance near distance, she could hear a car speeding up. She looked to her left, and a black SUV came bolting towards her. She saw a flash of the driver's face, and she froze. James yanked her back just as the car flashed by them, and the two went toppling over one another.
James got up quickly, and knelt in front of Stevie.
He put a hand on the side of her head, and another gently on her face.
"Stevie! Are you alright?!"
Speechless, she could only give a mere nod.
James, still worried, brushed a piece of her hair back, "Do you need a hospital?"
Stevie whispered, "No. No hospital. Let's go."
"Stevie—"
Stevie shook the feeling off, and gave James a small grin, "Seriously James, I'm fine."
Wary, James nodded slowly, "Do you want to go back to the hotel and rest?"
"Yeah. Please."
Clutching Stevie's hand tightly, James retraced their steps back to the hotel.
The doorman greeted them, "Back so soon?"
James gave a grim smile, "Yeah, the day isn't going as planned."
The doorman gave a swift nod, and James continued to lead the way up to their rooms.
Stevie's hands shook as she fumbled through her bag. Gently, James took the bag away, and a moment later, he pulled out the keycard.
Stevie shuffled to her bed, and laid down on it, curled into a little ball.
James pulled the blankets over her, keeping her warm in a cocoon of safety. As he got up to leave, she spoke, "Stay."
He halted, and laid down next to her. His arms wrapped around her waist, and she laid her back up against his torso.
Curled up together, they slowly drifted into an abyss of sleep.
When Stevie awoke, she could feel her head on something that was gently rising up and down. Rubbing her eyes, she tilted her head up, and smiled as she saw James.
He was fast asleep, and she squirmed a little, uncomfortable in her awkward position.
Her head was laid on top of his chest, and his arm was pinned under her back. Her legs were splayed out to the side, and her back was slightly curved. Stretching, she lifted her head off, and James began to stir.
Subconsciously, his arm shifted under her, and hugged her closer to him. A small smile traced Stevie's thin lips.
Stevie placed a hand on James' chest, and pushed herself off. He turned a little, but continued his slumber.
She padded over to the washroom, and stripped off her clothes. Turning on the water to a steady stream of hot water, she stepped in and ran her fingers through her hair.
Leaning against the cold shower tiles, she pondered if she was thinking straight.
It couldn't really be him.
Could it?
She shook it off; no, it couldn't be him.
Lathering her hair in the shampoo, she let the gentle wafts of shea butter float past her nose, and enjoyed the peaceful moments in the shower.
After finishing up, Stevie turned the shower knob to cold, and stood there for a couple of moments. She shivered slightly, feeling the chill go up her spine, and the hairs on her arms rise.
Stevie turned the water off completely, and twisted her hair, letting the drops of water sprinkle out onto the shower floor. She stepped out, pulling her hair into a very uncomfortable—and ugly—bun. She wrapped herself in the towel, and stepped out the washroom.
As she looked through her suitcase for a clean change of clothes, she heard James clear his throat from behind her.
Leaping to her feet with a tight grasp on her towel, she blushed beet red.
"James! I didn't know you were awake!"
James opened and closed his mouth like a dumb fish. Stevie cocked her head to the side, "James?"
He nodded, snapping out of his trance, "Sorry! I'll, um, look, um, away, yeah."
Stevie let a little laugh slip out, "Thanks."
She grabbed a black and white striped shirt, as well as a pair of black overalls. Pulling all her clothes on, she shoved her feet into a pair of beat up converse, and she hung a yellow bag on her shoulder.
"You can look now."
James' muffled voice came out from under the pillow, "Nah, I'll just die here."
"Get up. Let's enjoy our last day in Spain!"
James groaned, and trudged to his own room. Moments later, Stevie heard a knock at her door, and she swung it open to reveal James.
He was dressed in a frumpled shirt, a pair of shorts, and a big, fat yawn.
Grabbing his hand, Stevie pulled him determinedly,
"Let's go see stuff!" She announced aggressively.
As they made their way through the city they were staying in, the sun began to rise. They had awoken fairly early, and had the chance to admire the landscape.
Yellows and oranges floated in the background. Splatters of pale blue littered the sky, as the day began to officially start. Streaky white clouds danced around the bright morning sun.
Plant life was scattered around the architectural buildings. Roaming people were scarce, as it was still early, but they nodded as they passed by.
Stevie and James ran around from place to place, and though they enjoyed it, there was one thing at the back of their minds that they just couldn't forget.
Even as they returned on the bus and drifted to sleep, that thing still stayed glued to their memories.
That stupid, stupid thing.
