The rain poured from the sky and thunder rumbled. Riley pointed out a woman in a crazy hat we saw quite frequently. "There she is again." Riley said, averting our attention to the woman. "Crazy's hat always here." Maya Explained. "What do you think her deal is? Former movie star? Olympic figure skater?" Riley questioned. "Bum on a bench." Maya said like it was obvious. "Maya, for all we know she could be the owner of a bililon dollar company who just likes to observe people." I said.
"Look at how she looks at everybody. What goes on in a head like hers?" Riley wondered. "I guess we'll never know." I said. "Hey, Crazy Hat! What goes on in your head?" Maya called out to the woman. "And a new adventure begins." Riley said. "You, you and you, c'mere! I'll teach you about life!" Crazy hat said to us. Maya and I started walking but we were stopped by Riley.
"Can't. Stranger. You want me to sit on the bench, I'm gonna need three forms of identification." Riley told Crazy Hat. A police officer walked over to us. "Trust me. I know who she is. She's all right." The officer informed Riley. "Okay, copper." Riley said and she saluted to him. "Hey! That's officer copper to you." The officer told her.
"Mornin', Evelyn. Never gonna stop rainin', is it?" The officer asked Crazy Hat. "That's okay, Eugene. These three little dollies are abou to give me one of their designer ponchos." Crazy Hat told him. "They're garbage bags, Eugene." I told him as Riley held up a garbage bag from her bag to show it to him. "But you have to put a hole for your head." Riley informed him. "Ah, so you can breathe." The officer guessed. "So the garbageman doesn't throw you out." I corrected. "Yep. That happened." Riley agreed. "I was yelling, but he didn't care." She stated. "Kayden and I rescued her from the truck." Maya Added. "They chased me all the way to 33rd street." Riley said.
"Wow, now that are friends. Me? I don't chase nobody from nothin'." The officer told us. "What if I stole a banana? Maya asked him. "I'd be very disappointed in you." The officer told her. "Okay." Maya said in a very gloomy voice.
"I have observed you three are good friends?" Crazy Hat told us. "Don't miss a thing do you, Crazy Hat?" Maya asked. "No, I don't. Now you're going to be late for school and I'm going to be late for addressing the United Nations." Crazy Hat told us. "Have a good day, dollies. Be good people, learn all you can." She said and walked away with a poncho in her hand.
"How does that happen to someone, Maya, Kayden? Do you think that could ever happen to us?" Riley asked. She stuck her hand out and a man put money in it. "Well, at least nothing worse than that could ever happen." Maya said. Then the garbageman came and grabbed Riley and put her in the garbage bin. "Maya! Kayden!" Riley shouted for us. Maya and I grabbed our bookbags and Rileys and went to get her. "How does this keep happening!" I said.
"Belgium, 1831-" Dad said starting his lesson but was interupted by Riley. "No!" She shouted. "In 1831, Belgium-" He started again. "No!" Riley said, cutting him off again. "Riley?" He asked. "What's my thing?" Riley asked him. "What's your thing?" Dad repeated. "What am I going to be, dad? Am I gonna be okay?" She asked. "Riley, listen to me very carefully." He instructed. "Okay." Riley said. "In 1831, Belgium declared their its independence from the Netherlands." Mr. Matthews said.
"What will people be thinking of me if I end up living in a subway?" Riley asked. "What if nothing happens to her, sir? Riley can't up like that. She's my mean ticket!" Maya said. "What the? I just saw you at breakfast!" Dad stated. Farkle began speaking in Dutch.
"Calm down, Farkle. You're speaking in Dutch again." Dad told him. He slapped himself again and started to speak in Spanish. "No, no, no. You slapped yourself too hard. You went all the way to Spanish." Dad said. Farkle slapped himself again. "My education should not be based on you daughter's mood." Farkle told my father. "Neither should mine, but it is!" I responded. Dad then began speaking to the class.
"Guys, a daughter asks her father, "what's my thing?". This question will resonate in the hearts of all parents from the moment it's asked until the day their child feels comfortable in the world. Pretty soon you're all going to join the work force." Dad said. "What's your thing? What do you aspire to? How will you affect people? That's the only history that matters." He said. "Thank you, daddy." Riley said. "Thank you, daddy." Farkle repeated.
"All right, guys, tell you what. Let's split the class into two separate businesses and see how you do for yourself. We'll see if anyone's got anything to worry about. Okay?" He told us. "Excellent. What will our companies be?" Farkle asked. "Doesn't matter. Uh, muffins. You two are going to be 'Riley and Farkle's muffins'. That'll be your thing for the week." Dad told Riley and Farkle. "I already got my thing. Riley and Kayden are going to be a success and I'm gonna sponge off them until they get sick of me." Maya said. "We could never get sick of you." Riley said speaking for the both of us. "I am set for life!" Maya said.
"All right! Let's get out there and make cash, cabbage, cheddah-cheeze!" Farkle shouted. "Those are your values, Farkle?" Dad asked him. "What else should a company value but profits?" Farkle retorted back. "Well if I had a company, I'd treat my employees well and make sure we did right by our costumers." Lucas told Farkle. "You are everything that is wrong with this country." Farkle told him.
