As it had turned out, Squirrelheart had soon realised Hawkstar hadn't really wanted to talk to him, and then he had realised Sheepkit, Icekit, Bluekit and Brightkit were missing. He had arrived at the exact moment after Sheepkit had leaped into the stream.
He saved my life...
I nearly died!
Sheepkit had been ushered to the medicine cat den. Daisyfur kept insisting that Sheepkit wasn't hurt, but Sheepkit couldn't help but fret that the water had 'hurt' her.
"Just stay here to dry off," Daisyfur was meowing, though Sheepkit was barely listening. "And you can avoid Hawkstar's anger for now."
Why should I care if Hawkstar is angry? She should just be happy I'm still alive!
Sheepkit was watching from the entrance to the medicine cat den. Hawkstar was snarling angrily at Icekit, Bluekit and Brightkit. Sheepkit trembled with anger as she saw Icekit's confused expression.
She doesn't even know what Hawkstar is saying! Hawkstar is such a foxheart!
"Sheepkit nearly died!" Hawkstar was snarling furiously. "Who was the fishbrain who came up with an idea like this?" Her eyes were already fixed on Bluekit.
Sheepkit felt a pang of sympathy for Bluekit as the grey she cat stepped forward. She simply looked confidently at Hawkstar, tail swishing. "We were bored," she muttered. "But I'm sorry about Sheepkit. But it's not like I wasn't worried for her, too!"
Hawkstar snorted. "Being worried isn't enough. If Sheepkit was my daughter, I'd stop her from talking to a dangerous cat like you right away."
Dangerous? Is Hawkstar out of her mind? She's just a kit!
Bluekit bristled. "I was ready to jump in and save Sheepkit, but Squirrelheart shoved me back! I could have done it!"
"I would have helped!" Brightkit chimed in. He didn't even seem to be upset about being told off. He simply stood next to his sister, tail draped over her shoulders.
Hawkstar narrowed her eyes. "I know you two are tough," she growled. "But you would have been putting your own lives in danger. Squirrelheart saved Sheepkit. That's that."
Bluekit looked as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just looked away, ears flattening sulkily.
"Bluekit, Brightkit, you two are becoming apprentices in two moons, but you're still acting like kits," Hawkstar snapped. "Especially with the way you're endangering younger members of the nursery. Sheepkit and Icekit are barely a moon old!"
Bluekit glared at her leader, clearly not worried about disrespecting her. "Are you saying we should exclude the younger kits from our dangerous games? The younger kits like us."
Hawkstar didn't even bother answering. He turned to Squirrelheart, who had been silently sitting next to him the whole time.
"I thought you went to get the parents of these kits?" He growled at Squirrelheart. The ginger cat flinched, and flicked his tail towards two cats who were approaching. Bluekit and Brightkit's parents, Brambleheart and Sootpelt.
Brambleheart and Sootpelt had their eyes narrowed, tails swishing, as they approached their leader. "Couldn't this wait till morning?" Sootpelt grunted.
Hawkstar ignored Sootpelt. "Squirrelheart, I want Pouncestrike and Mousefoot here too."
Of course they haven't shown up... they didn't even come to check on me.
"I went to wake both of them up," Squirrelheart answered. "They said they were too tired. Pouncestrike even raked me." He placed a paw on his nose, presumably pointing out a scratch that Sheepkit couldn't see from the distance she was at.
