This is again Jesus's 'I AM' claims. By saying this, Jesus claims to be the only source of salvation, which he is. The sole protector of the world. The world needs light so that it does not get lost in darkness. We can never find a purpose, a way, or anything in darkness. We need the light, that is we need Jesus Christ. We, as his followers, need to follow the light, and when we do by listening to him, we'll no longer walk in darkness. Therefore we will have the light of life - salvation!
