Chapter Two
The sun glazed around the clouds, sending rays of light throughout the earth, spreading its luminosity across the lands. The skies turned a dark red and orange, blinding our graceful sight and caressing mankind's faces with its limited presence only to be observed again the next sunrise. The endless road continued into oblivion and my thoughts only wandered to what could be. Our destination was a mystery and even though the mind perceived its arrival, ones heart can lead some thoughts astray and believe in the unknown.
"What are you thinking about Chestnut? You seem distracted." Dallas inquired.
"Oh you know, just the earths beauty and shit. It needs to be appreciated in some sort of way and some point in life so why not now?"
He snorted out a laugh and smiled at me. "Well I guess you're right. I think about how beautiful the countryside is everyday considering I live here. Making routine supply runs always lifts my mood until little old Mary here shuts down." He scowled. "She runs like a beauty when she wants to but when she's on her period, shit goes down."
"Isnt she too old to still be having periods?" I questioned jokingly.
"Ha, most probably, but this girl runs like a machine. She never gives up and that's why its also really hard to get rid of her. Sentimental value, you know."
"Where'd you get the name Mary from?" I asked.
He tensed up a little bit and then answered the question hesitantly.
"She was named after my mom. She passed when I was born."
"Oh, I'm sorry. You must miss her a lot."
"There's nothing much to miss really. My dad used to tell me stories about her when I was little but that was it. I just get sad sometimes, that I never really got to know her." He explained.
"Well, that's normal I guess. We don't have to talk about this if you don't want to."
"Yeah," He drifted off, zoning out the rest of the world including the sound of my voice. "We've arrived." He said as we pulled onto a dirt road, bumpy until the sand continues its path. Soon we came to a creaky halt, causing me to collide with the dashboard which messed my forehead up pretty bad. My head felt dizzy and the last thing I could remember was Dallas asking me if I was okay and then total darkness.
After a while, or what felt like a while, I started to regain consciousness. I placed my palm onto my head whilst trying to lift myself upwards into a sitting position. I failed and fell backwards again, coming in contact with the pillow at full speed. I dropped my hand and gave up any hope of getting off of that bed. In about a seconds time, a balding old man walked into the room, wondering what had caused the big noise. I lifted my head slightly, risking the pain. He rushed to the side of my bed and placed his hand in my head, indicating for me not to strain myself. I looked around at the room. The walls were a pale pink and there were little stuffed toys surrounding all four corners of the room. A feathery dream catcher swung high above from the wooden ceiling and a strong essence filled the room. It smelt strongly of lavender.
"Where am I?" I asked. "Where's Dallas? Is he okay?"
The old man smiled. "He's alright sweetie. I'm more worried about you. You banged yourself up pretty badly. Mary is a rusty old thing and definitely needs some repairing." He admitted. I nodded and eased up a bit.
"So you must be Dallas' father?" I asked. He didn't really look much like him but there were distinct features that showed their resemblance. Before he could answer, there was a knock on the door.
"Hello, hello. Looks like somebody is awake." The door pushed open and from behind came a fresh Dallas. He looked like he had just taken a shower and changed from such a hard look to a simple pajama outfit. A v-neck and loose pants suited him well even though some might think otherwise. I guess my perception of the guy was different considering my feelings towards him. He walked in with a smile plastered to his face and he carried with him a tray of cookies and milk.
