Chapter Four

My mind was in shambles, I couldn't comprehend any of my surroundings because they were unfamiliar to me. I had never witnessed any scenery as such before and it gave me a sense of belonging and I honestly didn't want it to stop. Mary grumbled and groaned along the way but the view distracted me from the noise. I looked at Dallas and smiled. His side profile was even better than his actual looks but at that moment in time, at that particular second, when the light hit his face at a particular angle, I saw something I had never noticed before. I didn't just see how hot he looked or how that shirt looked amazing on him, I saw HIM. The real him. He just sat, quietly wondering about God knows what, but it made me realize his importance.

After a while, he caught on and noticed that I was staring at him. He turned with a confused look on his face and asked, "What? Is there something on my face? Chestnut, what the hell are you looking at?" All these questions were asked by him but they never processed into my brain until I looked into his eyes.

"Huh, what?" I asked confused. Oh yeah, I was staring at him. Shit? "Um, no there's nothing on your face." I smiled nervously. He raised an eyebrow and broke out in a smile.

"You've been acting real weird Chestnut." He sang mockingly and turned back to face the road.

We'd been on the road for a couple of days and the confinement of Mary was starting to get to us. We had been living off of French fries and water. Dallas had brought supplies but they were bound to finish one way or another and he also smuggled some extra cash out of T. I felt guilty, that Dallas went through all this trouble just so that he could tag along. I would've taken him even if he had nothing on him.

"Nah, I'm just really tired." I said.

He nodded and turned back to the road.

"So where to now?" I asked.

"Well, we've already passed two towns and a small squatter town, by this rate, we'll reach Guttertown in no time." He said. I looked at him, confused.

"What do you mean Guttertown? I've never heard of the place."

"Which is exactly why we're going there. If you don't know the place then your mom sure as hell won't."

"You don't know my mother. She'll stop at no end to find me, she'll use experts, technology, and all that crappy bullshit to find me." I slumped back down into my seat, defeated. No matter where I go, my mother will find me and I can't escape her grasp once she gets a hold of me.

"Well she's going to have a pretty damn, hard time finding you. Terrence suggested the place to me because apparently he knew someone who had been there. This town is off the radar, no signals in and out of the place. The place is rid of radiation and anything related to it. It's usually for people who are ELF sensitive but I think they could make an exception for a couple of lost teenagers." He explained.

"You're not a teenager." I pointed out.

"Agreed, but I can act like one? I mean if they knew my real age, they wouldn't even consider it because they'd think I was old enough to take care of you."

I nodded and relaxed into my seat. My bum was sore and warm and quite frankly I didn't like the feeling. I was confined in such a small space for two whole days and my legs were probably dead from all the sitting.

"How long till we reach this Guttertown?" I asked, getting impatient. Not knowing where we were going was better because then it had a little bit of mystery but now that I know, it was making me feel uneasy. You know what they say, ignorance is bliss.

"A few more hours, Chestnut." He said, not moving his neck, rather still focusing on the road.

"Okay."
