The wind was freezing cold.

It was the 25th of December - 2023, Our city - Gadeon, that once looked filled with life with it's sunny and green colors, where now gone under the stunning white, blue, cold frozen landscape.

The name is Kazumi Hagiwara, I am a volunteer of the Joint expedition military force, which was created in order to quickly and effectively respond to any kind of terrorist attacks, other nation attacks, or simply, act as peacemakers. This was a international unit which was operating all around the globe.

We were stationed up north in the Gadeon city which was located in Western Europe - Germany. The base itself was built in a hurry, as the fence was wired up first to protect its personnel and prohibit any civilians from entering. There is even a sign in the entrance saying in big red letters:

"DO NOT ENTER"

The base itself was filled with new green tents and a big fancy, white central command center. And according to a few trusted sources we had a terrorist attack somewhere in the city which we knew nothing about in the first place.

"...So, Why were we called here in the first place?

Said Jason. As he rubbed his hands together aiming to get a bit warmed up.

Jason was honestly not that great of a guy. Even Though he acted as an ass all of the time, when time went on we all got used to it. He definitely sat in prison for a reason

"No idea honestly, we were just called out here out of nowhere, they said we have a "Unknown" situation of sorts, but I don't know more about that."

Edward responded with a shaking voice. He was loading his 7.62 x 51 mm NATO rounds into his G-36 magazine.

Edward is the opposite of Jason. Unlike him Edward is nice and caring. He even helped me during the boot camp obstacle course which I almost failed miserably. Thanks to Edward I passed it and thanks to me Edward got his score lowered for helping. Good times.

"I guess we will soon find out."

As I mentioned, it seemed like a whole battalion was being deployed before us. They seemed to be heading towards the south east side of the city.

Soon we saw our captain Anderson running towards us seemingly a bit worried about the events that are unfolding right before our eyes.

"Alright people, listen up."

He said with a threatening voice.

"Our orders are to move out in 5 minutes, apparently our higher ups said that terrorist have taken the hospital in the south east part of the city. No more information was given, and believe me, I am worried about this just as you are, so keep your eyes open, mouths shut and maintain vigilance."

Captain Anderson is a very responsible person. Too responsible honestly. During one practice operation he almost shot me in the face with a M-14 rifle because I failed to carry out his orders. Of course he shouted at me saying that I was worthless and all that.

Aren't we all?

As captain Anderson finished his speech, for some reason I was starting to get worried, I don't know why or how, but a bad feeling was following me for the past week. I heard of reports of people dying for no reason at all or some being relocated to the local hospitals. All we heard from the radio that "All is fine, do not panic, everything is under control". The government was so unoriginal with the "calm down" messages that it sounded like a scene from a terrible movie.

"So...everyone ready?

Asked Edward.

"Seemingly...I think so."

Said Alice. As she was all shaking while hugging her rifle.

Alice was a bit of a scary cat. She barely passed the boot camp and became famous for being the one who was scared of "literally everything". But overall she had the "good guy" character type.

"Damn...It's so cold outside..."

"Yes it indeed is"

I replied.

"Though I think we have more serious matters to worry about don't we Alice?"

"Indeed"

As she said these words, I didn't feel any better at all, it was about -20 outside and it was freezing. My hands and toes were beginning to get numb even as I wore combat gloves.

Captain Anderson rushed to us quickly

"Everyone ready to move out? Good, on me"

We all were briefed on the mission but still were confused. We weren't actually sure if those people we are fighting against really are terrorists. Maybe a another nation is invading us and we are just simply hiding it? Or possibly something else?

These thoughts gave me more questions than answers and didn't calm me down even one bit.

"Alice, you too worried and scared about what is about to happen?"

Commented Jason

"N-not really"

Said Alice

"No worries I'll carry you through this, and honestly - you'll just be in my way as always."

As he laughs Alice looks at him with a disgusted smile and was about to say something.

"Don't pay attention to him Alice, he is a man with one big ego of his, he won't get far with it, that's a fact, if he does...well, you know the saying - The bigger they are the harder they fall?"

"I-I do!"

Said Alice happily and started to smile.

I honestly started feeling so proud of myself, that at least once in a lifetime I made a girl smile.

Few hours have passed, and were still walking towards the south east hospital. We currently only were about a halfway towards our mission target, and time went on very slowly. After there was about 2 clicks up south left towards the building, we heard gunshots coming from the south side. Captain Anderson presumed it was coming from the central plaza, as other teams were sent in to secure it, as they seemingly had plans to establish a new landing zone in the south part of the city.

"Are we there yet?"

Asks Jason with his annoying tone of his.

"We are about 1 more click away from the hospital."

Mentions Anderson.

"What information do you have on our mission target Sir?"

I ask.

"What information I got is that we got a report from the police in the hospital that very well armed personnel entered the building, and they were looking for somewhat in there, don't ask me what they searched for, but it definitely isn't my grandma"

I nod my head with the sense of gratitude on the newly provided information.

After about 20 minutes we finally arrived at the mentioned hospital.

"Is this it?"

Asks Jason.

"Yes, it is private."

The hospital was colored in a warm bright blue, it contained 4 floors and had 2 complexes it seems - One called "The Emergency Complex" and the "Rehabilitation Complex". The hospital itself looked wrecked - the windows were broken down, some of them boarded up. The building was in a nice shape overall, but the one thing that gave me the most worries where the 3 trucks stationed near the hospital.

"Trucks? who are they owned by?"

Asks Jason as he grips his rifle even tougher.

"Not Sure, but we are about to find out.
