After the incident the world has changed drastically in the past years. A new type of lifeforms that have emerged posed a high threat to mankind and took over most of the world and destroyed everything in their path.
Those lifeforms are called - Revenants
New nations were formed in order to fight the threat that drove mankind to the verge of extinction. Those new nations were called - The European Confederation, The American Coalition, The New Asian Federation and The Northern Union of Nations. The new nations didn't have good relations with one another, tensions are high and the only thing keeping every nation from splitting their throats was the revenants.
Everyday life didn't change that much - everything seemed normal up until you went to the outer districts of the New Asian Federation.
Whole Scandinavia, Baltic states, Middle east, and whole of Africa was overrun by revenants. And seemingly, there wasn't a safe place to go to anymore, more and more people went missing day to day. The reasons for their disappearances where simply covered up by the higher ups, every time someone disappeared, everyone always heard them say - “They got relocated to another outpost for a permanent basis, as they were needed there for special projects”. It honestly wasn't very believable though.
Of course, all of those “cover ups” where made in order to decrease the panic among the current residents in the cities.
It's already been 7 years.
I currently work as a engineer in Ereon Mecha Industries. It has a decent pay and a good work environment.
“Kazumi, make sure the frame is properly wielded and the turning axis is in proper order”
Says my co-worker
“Uh Uh”
“Then tighten...Are you even listening?”
“Probably”
“Then what are you supposed to do now, repeat what I said”
“Fix this, check for any broken parts and wielding errors”
“God dammit Kazumi, you only heard about half of what I said!”
“Yeah, yeah, no worries I’ll get it done.”
But I’ll be honest - the job is a real pain in the ass. I didn't like my boss nor my co-workers, but a man has to make a living somehow.
We were building a MT-56 Main battle tank. Which the company called it the newest of its class. Clearly it still used gunpowder munitions. They say this tank will be able to kill many revenants before going down.
I highly doubt that honestly. All explosive weaponry was ineffective against the bastards, I had to witness it with my own eyes in order to prove that nothing works against them.
“I bet this tank will at least kill one of these creatures”
Says my fellow co-worker
“What if I told you, that I highly doubt that?”
He looked at me with a surprised face.
“What makes you think that?”
“Eh...Nevermind, let's keep working before the boss shows up and gets our asses, he doesn't seem to like the decline in productivity”
I say with a smug face.
“Yeah, you're right”
We worked for a few more hours, after which we had lunchtime, which was not that great. The food was terrible at the least.
The government probably hides the fact from people that the tanks we are building and troops we are conscripting and training - are just for show, by show I mean to keep these creatures at bay. Current soldiers and engineers alike keep saying how they will kill loads of revenants and go home as spoiled heroes. They forget all what they said once they are face to face with that thing, soldiers get even more hopeless when they see that they can't kill that thing, only to slow it down. I suppose it was to keep up hope that this war might be finished someday.
“Right, I’ll be heading off, take over for me will you?”
I say.
“Will do.”
As he says this, I wave my hand and head straight to my locker.
As I open it, I saw my manager rushing up to me, he seemed to be quite worried.“Eh...eh...Kazumi Hagiwara...eh...wait...I want to tell you something”
Says my manager who barely can catch his breath.
“Huh? After I saw you running manager, I am very interested to hear what you are about to say. So, what’s this about?”
“Apparently, some agent came from a government funded company, not sure he didn't tell me much, but he says he wants to talk to you.”
“Alright, I’ll hear what he has to say.”
I grab my jacket and slowly started heading towards the meeting rooms.
“If those are official government agents, do not say anything bad about the company or I will have your head!”
Says the manager with his lifted voice.
“Yeah, yeah don't have to tell me twice.”
I say and head off.
At the end of the hallway I see a man dressed in a business suit. He has some sort of badge on him, but I couldn't really look into it. He also seemed to have a scientist accompanying him.
I approached him.
“I am Agent William of the New Asian Federations Intelligence branch and this is researcher Doctor Daisuke, we wish to have a word with you if you don't mind.”
“Alright, I’ll see if I can answer some of your questions”
I say.
“Good, follow me to the room and we shall begin.”
Even Though my suspicions were high that something bad might happen, I reluctantly proceeded inside the dark room which was illuminated by a single light. I sat down in the chair and patiently awaited his first question.
