Chapter 1
July 5, 2013
It’s another boring Friday afternoon, I thought as I walked up the stairs to the dorm rooms. My morning was nothing but wasted time; the university has this guidance meeting to see how you’re coping with the distance away from your home and family. I wish I could’ve skipped it but I couldn’t, it was compulsory. I shrugged as I thought back to the boring presentation by a psychology major. I looked around and found myself in the third floor. I’m this tired and I’m still in the third floor? I’m way out of shape.
I hoisted myself up the last step, finally in the fifth floor. I took the room key from my pocket and opened the door. My dorm room was average sized, it was originally meant for three people but now it is occupied by two. Me and my cousin, Charlene, as of this moment she’s out, though I have no idea where. I dropped my bag on my desk and sank on the bed. I just laid there watching the ceiling as the wall fan whirred. What to do now?
I grabbed my bag and found my battered Samsung in there lifeless. I sighed as I unlocked the keypad, it’s so boring! There’s nothing to do here. I opened my messages and found an unread text message from Yvonne, a friend of Charlene I managed to become friends with. It was a group message and then I realized I needed to visit an ATM machine to get my allowance. I groaned I need help to find my way to the mall.
“Maybe I can ask Yvonne to go.” I said to myself as stood up.
I grabbed my wallet and got my favourite sling bag. It was a black bag I got from a bargain back home a few months before, it has a hefty weight to it even if it’s empty but I liked using it, it was cool and my style so yeah. I shoved my tablet in there and then my wallet and cell phone before closing the zipper. I locked the room and went down to the third floor to look for Yvonne.
I stopped by a mirror to inspect myself. Black shirt, distressed blue jeans, black converse chucks, black sling bag hanging on my shoulder and my brown eyes rimmed with black eyeliner. I’m a goner when it comes to black I couldn’t have enough of it. I straightened up my ponytail as I knocked on the door of Yvonne’s room.
“Come in” she called out obviously getting ready.
I opened the door and found her in front of her mirror trying to fix her short bob. She was wearing a thin white cotton sweater, capris and white shoes. Her bag was on the table in front of her.
“Hey, it’s a good thing I caught you before you left.” I said as I sat on her bed.
“Really? Why?” She asked me.
“Uhm. I was looking for someone to accompany me to the mall; I need to visit the friendly ATM machine there.” I said.
“Oh well, I’m heading there myself to meet up with my friends.” She said.
“Can I come with?” I asked.
“Sure, the more the merrier.” She said looking at me through my reflection on the mirror.
I sat down her unmade bed wondering what she was doing fixing her hair or making it worst. My silenced overwhelmed me that I couldn’t even speak when she spoke to me.
“By the way, I’m still going to the dentist to get my braces cleaned.” She said.
“Oh, it’s okay. I can go with you if you want, since I’m afraid to go alone. Being it my first time.” I said.
“Really?” She asked me.
I just nodded as I watched her stand up to her full height. She was tall like really tall. I’m just 5’0 feet standing-up and my head is just a bit above her shoulder. She was that tall, model tall. She got her bag before checking the mirror and giving the “get up we’re leaving look.”
On the way to the bus stop she told me that we’ll go directly to the mall. Postponing her trip to the dentist office since her friends were already there waiting for her. I mean us. (Whichever applies justly?)
It was quiet in the bus, I tried to well, small talk but the very little conversations kept dying that I gave up trying to keep it alive. Instead I focused on the window admiring the places we passed and looking at the sheer beauty of those little things I see.
“We’re here!” She exclaimed excitedly.
She got up just as enthusiastically while I sagged, I don’t know why but I am very susceptible to all things social today. I guess I’m in the mood to be stuck in my head for a while. I sighed as I walked behind her trying to catch up and listen to what she was saying when she faced me.
“Can you pretend to be Marjorie for today?” She asked.
I jumped on the idea, I can pretend to be some person and I could forget them when this was over. It was a good thing because I don’t really like meeting new people.
“Sure.” I said excitedly.
That’s when she led me to the snake pit. Sitting on the left side of the table was a guy. The spiked hair and the all black ensemble struck me odd. On the right side was a girl, she had black hair that falls right below her shoulder and she was a little on the heavy side.
“Hi guys!” Yvonne said.
“Hi Vonii, who’s she?” the girl asked.
“Guys this is Marjorie a dorm mate of mine.”
“Marj, this is West and Noni.” She said.
“Hi” I said as I looked at them.
“There’s something odd about this guy” I thought. He was expressionless almost like what I felt just a while ago. When we moved to sit down, Yvonne’s cell phone rang. She stopped in front of me so I had to stop too.
“Hello?” She said to the phone
“Yeah we’re at the mall. I’m here with Zy. Yeah. Ok. Bye.”
Then she hung up. I glared at her back side I was supposed to be gone after this day. I thought angrily to myself well my plan in ruined at least…
“Honestly guys, she’s Zy. Zylene.” She said as she sat down.
At least she unconsciously lied. I had to do the silent happy dance. I was so happy it showed. A little while later, Yvonne’s beau arrived with a friend. I was informed by my ears that his name was Daniel and the other guy was Andrei. They were talking and half the time I wasn’t actually listening, until Noni spoke up.
“You know it’s weird that West and Vonii are facing each other.” Noni said.
“ Yeah, it actually seems like a group date.” I added.
That was when Daniel and West changed positions. This time around West was in front of me while Daniel was in front of Yvonne. I just had to agree to Noni have I? I sighed inwardly. There’s something about this guy that just draws me in and I’m having that weird feeling I should run away from it. It’s like my head is telling me to get away but my body is having second thoughts. I knew I had to trust my instincts or else it will become so messy. And besides I promised myself long before the school year started that this year is going to be different, and that this year I won’t mind the boys. Just because of that one person.
A few minutes later we all decided to go have some fun and ride the bump cars. We were a group of six so I thought it would be okay, but all that happened was me trying to impress that guy in black. I don’t even know why, I just had that sudden urge to, even though I could still hear those alarms ringing in my head that he would only mean danger, I couldn’t help but be drawn to him. I never felt this way before.
[A/N: Hi readers! *waves* I’m really excited putting this up here. I hope you like it and please please please tell me, comment below what you think if I need to make changes or if you really like it. If you really really like it please vote for it I would really appreciate it. Thanks!]
