Chapter 4

***July 7, 2013***

I woke up pretty late, later than I usually rise on a Sunday morning. It was almost afternoon. Having more than twelve hours of sleep is not good for me. I thought as I got out of bed. I was still pretty tired, maybe because of the overdose of sleep. I stretched my muscles as they have become somewhat compacted.

Or is it just the feeling when you get hit with a truckload of negativity? After that very happy dance last night, I texted Aniki to thank him for the donuts, he replied with “No problem, we couldn’t finish a box so yeah I gave you the extra.”

Okay that one sentence took all of my energy away that I decided to leave the other donut on my desk and go to bed. I was thinking hell if that was it, I’d just feed this to the rats. I was just so disappointed.

Remembering that my eyes landed on the paper bag, I checked it and unfortunately, the rats hadn’t had the chance to tear it apart. I sighed as I went over to Charlene. She was still sleeping but I woke her up just because.

“Charlene, come on wake up it’s already eleven.” I told her.

To my surprise she groggily got up without any complaint, that’s the first. I thought to myself as I picked up my battered almost lifeless Samsung. My eyes popped when I saw his name on the screen, but I just ignored it.

“I’m hungry.” I said.

“Me too.” Charlene said her hand on her abdomen.

I smiled. She got up took her purse, I did the same and followed her out the door. Everyone was there Marj (the real one), Yvonne and Marie. We decided to eat at a nearby fast food chain. While we were there, Yvonne kept on talking about him but I was out of it. I was focused on my food, not on what she was saying.

“Actually, He’s waiting in Jabee.” She said.

That sent me out of my reverie, I sighed.

“We’re going to go to church together.” She said.

I tried not to listen but still, I couldn’t help but listen.

“Do you mind if I go with you?” I asked her.

“Sure, Aniki won’t mind.” She said

I almost rolled my eyes at that. We went to prepare for church. I was just not in the mood for anything today. I don’t know why but I decided to kind of dress up. I was wearing a blue blouse, my tattered jeans folded at the ends and khaki wedge heels. I didn’t mind the stares, it was normal for me already.

Just as we neared Jabee, Aniki and Yvonne went out. I snorted.

“He looked just… ewww...” Charlene whispered to me.

At that moment I couldn’t help but agree with her. It felt as if it was just a nightmare. I kept saying to myself that I don’t have a chance with him. He doesn’t like me like I expected. He saw me as a little sister and besides he has Yvonne by his side.

I sighed as we stepped inside the church. I tried to ignore them and focus on my little group, but I just couldn’t Yvonne keeps on getting my attention. I looked at them and she signalled me to go stand next to Wes. I did and I just stayed there quiet and still, trying to distract myself.

“Together we pray the Lord’s prayer.” The speaker boomed.

I had to take a breath and relax before reaching out my hands. He took it and Yvonne took my other hand. I felt instantly calm as his hand rested on mine. His hands were soft and rough at the same time. All my ramblings about the donut were erased and all I can think of is his hand on mine.

Love is like that, one moment you’re fuming mad at him and then he does this one thing and you completely forget it. The only thing left to ask is that… Am I in love with West? I don’t know.

After the mass we went back to Jabee and by “we” I mean Wes, Yvonne, me Charlene, Marj and Marie. Charlene, Marj and Marie separated from our group and formed their own. I was torn which group to go with. I wanted to go with Yvonne and Wes but I don’t want to seem so clingy. So what I did was, I feigned innocence, I mean, I acted like I needed convincing but I already told Charlene that I’m going with them.

On the bus to the mall, as I was staring at the surroundings, my phone rang. I was nervous when I saw the caller ID it was none other than my mom. I hastily answered it.

“Mom?” I answered.

“Why are you going to the mall again on the same week?” she asked.

“I forgot to buy something for school.” I lied.

“Ohh okay. Hurry back.” She said.

I breathed a sigh as she hangs up, that was close. When we got to the mall it was same old same old. We were sitting around in the food court while convincing Yvonne’s other half to join us. I got to know them better then. I know now that they both like video editing and making movies. They are still looking for people to include in those videos. And then there’s Wes reason for sleeping so early, he was already working at the same time studying his second course. I was amazed at that. He wanted to learn more. Daniel arrived a few minutes later.

“So guys, some sci-fi movie is coming out this Friday. You want to watch?” he asked us.

“That sounds fun.” Yvonne said.

“That’s a bummer. I’ll be out of this one.” I said.

“Why?” Wes asked me his eyes showing disappointment.

“I’m running low on funds.” I said honestly.

“Well, I won tickets for two at work for my performance a while back we can use those.” Wes said.

What is he doing? I asked myself.

“Really?” I asked aloud.

“Yeah, I used to take Yvonne but since you’re here. I’ll treat you.” He said.

And just like that he squashed my new formed hope. I don’t know what to make of this guy. He is showing interest and squashing it at the last possible moment. Agh. There is no hope.
