Chapter 1

Most mornings I'm woken up by my alarm clock. Except earlier today. Well, today is my first day of high school. Every year my best friend, Angela, calls me to give each other pep talks and to say whatever is on our minds. We plan to make a book of our first days. Anyways back to this morning. My phone rang but I must have forgotten I changed the ringtone. When I was picking one I couldn't decide. I ended up picking a random one. That wasn't such a good idea. I nearly gave myself a heart attack. I woke up to my mother jumping on my bed and the sound of gunshots. My mother had heard it passing by my room and freaked out.

Yup, gunshots and my mother literally running down my door and jumping on my bed so scared. I looked at her just once and started screaming. I freaked myself out. That's not a good way to start out my new chapter of life. But after the phone stopped ringing and when we were quiet was when I realized Angela had called. Of course, I checked first to be sure. I called her back.

"Hey girl! You woke up a little late." Says Angela.

"Actually, no I didn't. I was freaking out because of my ringtone and my mother. I do need a new door, though!"

"Oh, your mother didn't pee herself, I hope. I remember last time she did. That was a bad sight. You know what? Maybe, she needs to do some Kegel exercises. You know like on Keeping Up With the Kardashians when Kris was told she had to do them because of that little problem. LMFAO! I can so totally see your mother teaching us how to do them also."

"Yeah I can. But, she didn't piss herself. I also would not like to discuss my mothers bodily functions. Thank you very much!"

We talked for nearly an hour. I wondered if she was all ready. I wasn't. All I'm wearing is a pair of short shorts and a racerback tank. So, I'll go to my closet and pick out my outfit for the day. A neon yellow pair of bermudas (acceptable for school and mom), a white tank top with a table cloth looking shrug that buttons in front. I also have my new Converses on. They have Hello Kitty™ on them.

After that I went downstairs. My mother was yelling at Ezekiel, a foreign exchange student from Italy. He's about three years older than me. He is so hot! The second day he was here, we hung out all day. Everyday since then I try to get to him before my mom takes him to introduce him to different people. Even the ones she doesn't know.

I hate talking about my mom. Just to say the least, she is a show-off. When my brother went into the military she told everyone. Last year I made honor roll, a first for me, she decided not to tell anyone. She treats me like I am a boring, good for nothing person with no life. She always does that to me. I don't really care anymore since Im used to it.

Now back to me being downstairs. As soon as I got close enough to hear what they were saying they shut their mouths. So typical. I didn't even have ten minutes for breakfast at home. What a day it's already been.

On the ride over everything was silent. Then we got into walking distance to the school. It was so awkward.

As soon as we pull up my mother says, "Don't walk to the door yet. I want a picture of you both. My daughters first day of high school, and my first foreign exchange student. It will all change your life you know. Maybe if you can, show Ezekiel to people you know. He is new to this country, after all. Be a lookout for him."

"What?! I hope you aren't serious. I only know people from my grade. Not the entire school."

"Mrs. Jayne, it is good. I can look my own way around. You no need to give me friends, Layla."

When he said that, I got out of it. The picture was probably horrible. I always look so fat in pictures not taken by me. Plus, there was random people behind it. One good thing was that Angela got there just in time to be in it with us.

"You look amazing, Miss. Layla Renee Jayne. I love the colors. Mine's just plain boring," says Angela.

"No yours is cute. I actually really like it." She wore a black shrug with an olive green tank top underneath it. She also wore camoflauge capris with combat boots.

"Ready to meet some hot older guys? I am. A senior boy already told me I was pretty."

"Cool. Well you're the only one to tell me I look amazing today. But then again I haven't been here that long and I didn't ride the bus."

I thought about what I had said. I was sure no one would tell me that. So totally FALSE! Alyse, the most popular girl in my grade, told me I looked really good. I couldn't believe she would talk to me. Maybe my dad was right. He told me, on the last day of eighth grade, that everyone will change, puberty will happen, and new friends and opprotunities will come along. At the time I didn't really listen and take it in. I mean come on who listens to their parents when they tell them that. But about a week after that talk our families lives had changed forever.

He was driving to work and stopped where he was supposed to. A drunk semi-truck driver didn't see him and went right on top of him. Instantly died! That made me remember the talk. My mom was talking to him when it happened. The EMTs had told us that he still had the bluetooth in his ear and hands on the steering wheel. I believe that he did what he had to and the drunk driver is responsible for it. I did hear everything along with my mom because she had him on speakerphone.

I still have nightmares of listening to all the crunches. However, today I felt good. I knew he was with me. I bet if he was still alive, Alyse wouldn't have been so nice to me. Everyone knows that she is only acting like that because she feels bad for me.

Once first period came she wasn't in it. Yes! Angela was. Score two! It sucks that we're on separate sides of the room. I also hate having Algebra 1 first thing in the morning. The teacher is really handsome. I don't know about getting an A or B for the semester will work. I may just stare at him the whole time. He is so dreamy.

Second period is English, my best subject. The two things I love the most about it is that I can write stories and put anything I want in them, within reason. I also love taking spelling tests. Now I can't help it when I see a spelling mistake I have to fix it.

I'm really excited, though. Four classes a day. But my next stop is freshman lunch. There are a few seniors in there because they intern for freshman teachers.

Lunch was pretty good. I can't believe the choices. There is a line for soup and salad. One for soup and sandwiches, a main line, and a pizza line! I chose main line. I had spaghetti and a breadstick. I can't believe they actually serve soda. It's only caffeine free. They also have milk and juice and a dessert everyday. Then there is also a snack bar.

Third period is marching band. All freshman have to take it. I like it because I do colorguard. In grade school I played the violin. I kind of wish they had an option to play that. If people can't march with it, then let us play it on the sideline. We were all require to play an instrument. Some kids thought it was stupid. Anyways, as of right now the show is learned and drill spots memorized. We just need to clean it up a bit. We are an AAA band. We are so effing huge! It's all us freshman like I already said, and then the ones who wanted to keep doing it.

Fourth period is Spanish. My teacher is really hot! He's called Mr. Pablo. He told us his last name is usually a first name. I've already learned so much. We have a pre-test tomorrow on the greetings and numbers to see how much we remembered from one day.

So, overall my day wasn't that bad. I hope this year will be average. Today was certainly average. Angela only has one class with me! I hate it. Unless you consider lunch a class then we have two. I suppose it's time for dinner.

"Hey honey! How was your day?"

"Average, duh! It wasn't at all what I expected. My classes are super easy. Well they sound it. Tell me about your day mother."

"Oh you know. Same o' same o'. But, we may be getting a dog."

"WHAT?" I say while I spit my food all over the table, "You really mean it? Oh my glob! I love you so fudging much!"

"Yes. Calm down please. Well Ezekiel how was your day? Meet any new friends? What do you think about us getting a dog?"

"It went good. I made nine new girlfriends and seven new boyfriends. Dog will be good here. I do not care because it will stay here."

Well, I can say I was too excited for the rest of dinner. It was delicious. Great way to end the night is when Ezekiel asked to watch a movie with me.
