Chapter - 1
If you want to know what silence means you should visit the main library of the Panjab University. It dwells there in every nook and corner. No one can ignore its presence. No one can defy its reign. Not even those who consider clamouring as their birthright. The silence living here keeps everyone silent. It doesn't matter who you are. If you are in there, you have to keep mum.
The bookworms just cherished this place and got attracted to it like a moth to a flame. One of them just arrived and sat down on the empty chair, placing the book on the table quietly, careful not to make any noise. She was the student of M.A. Economics first year and visited the place after her classes every day. Though her classmates called her bookworm, she also had a wonderful name: Ritu Thakur. The place provided a perfect atmosphere for a student like her. It had a large number of books and many were such which would not be available in the market easily. You can pick just any title and read comfortably on any of the study tables arranged in rows in the middle of the hall.
She sat still for a moment, taking in the silence and serenity pervading in the length and breadth of the big hall, getting into the right mood, tuning her thoughts to the peaceful atmosphere before devouring the book she had taken from the book section.
After a moment she was ready with a required focus and concentration and examined the title and the author of the book, making sure she had got the right one. Modern Microeconomics: theory and application by Dominick Salvatore. Good. This was the book the professor had referred during today's class. She smiled as she opened it, remembering the remark made by one of her classmates: "This afternoon the bookworm of our class would go to the library and eat away the printed pages of this new book referred by sir."
Everyone present in the class had erupted in laughter. She had also joined them, giggling sheepishly. She didn't mind being called such names. She liked spending time with the books. I will eat away all the books of this library. I am a passionate bookworm.
Taking a deep breath, she was about to dive in the mysteries of the economic world when she saw something which destabilised the mood and tuning she had just got into. A boy sitting two rows away from her was looking at her and when she caught him in the act, he gave her a soft smile, the kind you give someone you know. She dropped her gaze to the book instantly, showing total indifference to his smile and the way he was looking at her.
She didn't know the boy at all. She had no idea what course or degree he was pursuing. But since last three weeks or so, she was encountering him almost every day in the University. Sometimes near the economics department, sometimes in the canteen, sometimes in the parking area and sometimes here in the library and every time she had found him looking at her. Today he went one step ahead and gave her a smile.
