"I plan to take very good care of you"
Jimin swallowed hard. He had never seen someone who could smile with such ferocity. There was no pleasure, no joy, in that smile.
"For the last time, don't just grab me!" Jimin yelled out.
The carnivorous smile vanished as soon as Jimin swatted his hand away. The entire room went silent, just then Jimin recognized what he had done. His hands grabbed the hemline of his robe and squeezed to calm his nerves. He hoped, he hadn't just cut his lifespan short.
"You!" Taehyung growled, jumping to his feet. "How dare you be so rude to– "
"Enough, Taehyung!" Yoongi's voice boomed through the large hall, his eyes glared furiously at his right-hand man.
Leaning back, Yoongi began to laugh, his voice deep. The men around him exchanged nervous glares. Jimin slowly got up just to get away, sitting as far from his as possible.
Taehyung looked up at Min Yoongi with furrowed brows. "Please tell me you are not interested in that boy. A stiff breeze would knock him over."
"I am not so sure about that." Hoseok laughed. "He just gave Yoongi a good shove. He's small but a tough one, for sure."
Jimin quietly cleared his throat. Did the forget he was there? Was he invisible to tis gaggle of gossiping warlords?
Jungkook shot the dancer a pitying look before leaning over and whispering in an amused tone "Don't worry Jimin, it's all right. That's just how they talk. It means nothing."
Jimin looked over at Jungkook and scanned his face for any sarcasm but he came back empty handed. He seemed to be the only decent human being in this time. They continued to chat for a little and Jungkook started explaining to him his chores as a chatelain. It was a delighting conversation, compared to the rest he experienced so far but it was ruined due to Taehyung, who was sitting in the spot closest to Yoongi, sending him looks with burning anger in his eyes.
"This is enough." Lord Yoongi's command shot through the room. "I have decided that Jimin will stay with us. Taehyung, you better accept him fast. Why don't you show him around the castle."
Not only Jimin's mouth stood wide open, Taehyung's did as well but he bowed without hesitation and firmly walked out of the audience chamber and Jimin quickly followed after him.
They walked in silence until Taehyung stopped and stared at the other. "I still don't trust you. And if you try anything with Lord Yoongi, it will be the last thing you do."
Jimin coughed. "He's the one trying things!"
Taehyung just looked at him with furrowed brows, waiting for something and Jimin quickly noticed his mistake.
"I mean... yes! You're right!"
Jimin could already tell life here was going to be frustrating. Taehyungs attitude is grating but Jimin couldn't fault his loyalty. When he thought about it, it made perfect sense that he was wary of him. A stranger shows up out of nowhere only to get close to your lord. In this time period you would be crazy not to get suspicious. Jimin had three months here and he realized he wouldn't get far if he kept butting heads with everyone.
"... turn there and you'll find the cellar. There's the kitchen.... Where you listening to any of that?"
Jimin was brutally pulled out of his thoughts as the other man grabbed his arm.
"Sorry, no. I was thinking."
"Alright." Taehyung just shook his head "I'll go over it again then."
To Jimin's surprise, he talked him through the layout of the castle again very politely. He was taking this very seriously, even with his doubts about him. Jimin looked at him while he was talking. He still didn't understand the fan club, but Taehyung does seem to possess at least some good traits and this time Jimin listened closely to what the other had to say while they continued walking down long wooden corridors.
A dim passage had caught Jimin's attention. "You didn't mention anything about this corridor. Where does it lead?"
"This path will take you to the highest tower. It is that loft at the top of the castle you saw when we arrived. Normally it would be a symbol while the lord stays in the inner citadel, but that's not the case here."
Jimin peeked into the hallway before curiously asking: "Are you saying Yoongi lives up there?"
Taehyung nodded and Jimin turned around, no longer interested in what lay beyond that uninviting hallway.
"Now that you know, I don't want to catch you wandering over here."
"Trust me." Jimin glared over at Taehyung, "I will be keeping my distance."
The idea of going to see that ogre of my own volition was preposterous but luckily Jimin got distracted from this thought very quickly. Further down the walkway there was a group of men walking and talking.
Jimin and Taehyung were able to pick up snippets of their conversation.
"Our lord has made it back safely."
"I heard there was an assassination attempt. Poor fools"
"I know... it will just make him even angrier. They won't live long to regret it."
The men, their words mix of respect and fear, drifted out of earshot again.
Taehyung nodded in agreement. "Everyone is relieved to have our lord back, but I won't rest until we catch the ones responsible."
Jimin couldn't share in either the men's relieve or Taehyungs unease. His thoughts were elsewhere.
"They won't live long enough to regret it."
If Jimin remembered one thing about Min Yoongi from history class, it was this well-known phrase: "What does Yoongi do to the bird that won't sing? He kills it."
Even though he was deeply immersed in his thoughts, Jimin noticed Taehyung looking at him from the side.
"You've gotten awfully quiet."
Jimin giggled. "It's nothing for you to worry about. I'm not plotting."
The other man opened his mouth to respond when they heard someone yell from the end of the hallway.
"Lord Taehyung!" Breathing hard, another vassal came running up to them. "I have a report from our scouts in the east! One of the regional rulers has decided to revolt against our lord!"
"A revolt?" Jimin's voice almost sounded like a shriek.
Taehyung grew grim. "Jimin we're going back. We must get this message to Lord Yoongi."
He turned around, hurrying towards the direction they were coming from.
"Wait, we? I'm coming too?"
Without answering Jimin, Taehyung led him right back to the audience chamber.
