Homecoming
By bkraccer7

Those who had lived here at least five years knew of the Burkley's. Every town has that one family, you never know what they're up to. You know they live on 11247 Drane Road, and that something happened years ago that caused them to go into hiding. Other than that, everyone there is a mystery in and of themselves. Lacey walked up, Grace and Ollie giggles behind her. Lacey shivered, now realizing the effect of her actions. Turning around she pulled a face of fear, Grace laughed and pushed her back up toward the doorstep. Slowly, Lacey grabbed the large golden door knocker. It had two large eyes, and reminded her of the movie Labyrinth. She slammed down, and heard the gold stop with a thud. They ran behind one of the walls and waited, but they didn't know what they were waiting for. Suddenly through the thin walls she heard  a small squeak. Nobody answered the door.
Ollie shrugged, pulling Lacey and Grace away from the house. He looked away, showing that same sign of fear.  As the three were stepping off the porch and into the blackness of the street, Grace wondered about the following week. It was the Homecoming dance, and she was still awaiting an invite. Lacey and Grace had been friends for as long as they could remember, but through these last months one force had started to worry them. Ollie. The one thing they both wanted was for Ollie to ask them to homecoming. It was an unspoken problem. None of the three had talked about it but they knew it was there. They had been walking a while. When they saw a dark Corvette driving down the other side of the road. It was going their direction. It was too dim to see the driver or true color, but Grace pulled her eyebrow up for a second. It was as if she recognized it, but she just shook her head and kept going.
Grace was short, maybe 5 foot. With bright blond hair, always very pretty. She was preppy, very smart and light. You could always feel the energy coming off of her, but she always had to be careful. She was known for being klutzy. Lacey had dyed blue hair, which she loved. She always dressed in Earthy tones, and hated dresses. She was always very calm, collected, ad ready for the world. Last of the trio, was Ollie. A tall boy, maybe 5' 9", with dark brown hair. It always had lighter streaks though. The thing most noticeable of him though, was his pale face. He looked like he could be dead.
After walking about half a mile through the empty streets, they found Grace's house. A mint colored shade with cracks around the garage door. Lacey has been living her for a few months, waiting for her sister to come pick her up after she's done with her internship. They waved Ollie goodbye since he had to head home, and they stepped inside. As Lacey got inside the door she heard Grace's mother Josie, proudly singing to Frank Sinatra. She was making cookies, Grace's favorite, peanut butter. Grace ran over and reached out, waiting for her mother to hand her one. Josie brought down her hand, and slapped her on the wrist.
"These aren't for you sweetheart, I'm going around and giving families cookies" Josie said.
"Aww come on Mom, I'm starving"
"Well then you and Lacey can eat some leftovers from the fridge, and don't forget. I'll be gone rock climbing tomorrow. So you two will have to make your own food"
Grace rolled her eyes, grabbed Lacey's hand, and walked up her spiral staircase. They only had three bedrooms, so Lacey and Grace always got the attic. Grace was always mad that her brother Max got the downstairs bedroom, he was only seven. Lacey ran into their room and jumped up onto her twin bunk. She always got the bottom, it was her favorite. Grace never really cared so she just agreed to sleep on top. Lacey threw on an old blue t-shirt and white shorts preparing to go to bed. Grace usually just fell asleep in whatever she was wearing; today her blue overalls and pink sweater. Slowly, Lacey reached under her bunk, and felt the edge of her blade hiding there. She always kept a knife under the bed, it made her less afraid of not sleeping in her own home. It was a small blade usually used for cutting vegetables, but it was the only knife that Josie didn't use on a daily basis. She never told Grace about the knife, only her mom and dad knew. It was the only way that she wouldn't be in trouble. Lacey was lucky to have her knife, the Kitchenware were Josie's favorite and we were never allowed to touch her knife block. Grace and Lacey got back into bed, Grace fell asleep quickly, but for Lacey it took some time. So she stared up at the ceiling and wondered what would come of tomorrow.
Grace awoke last, to hearing Ollie pound on the front door.
"C'mon guys were gonna be late, I can't miss another math class"
Grace ran downstairs just leaving on her pajamas. She grabbed Lacey and her bag from the dining table and ran outside.
    "Oww!!"
Grace didn't realize that when she opened the door, it smacked Ollie in the face.
"Sorry Ollie, I was just in such a hurry"
"Clutz", Lacey whispered. Still being held by her collar.
    "Whatever, let's just go"
