Blue, I've never seen blue. My mom told me that rivers were once a beautiful blue that you could even see through it. That no fungi crasped to it. The sky was once blue to she told me, she said white clouds danced as the blue was there stage. I never saw blue or white clouds. I only ever saw gray. Gray clouds, gray water, gray sky. A gray life.
As my back collided with the steal mettle of the van the doors were locked shut. I rubbed my head where one of those little bastards hit me with the butt of they're gun.
"You OK" I heard, I looked over to see Dylan sitting on the ground looking at me with concern.
"Just peachy" I muttered shifting slightly to get comfortable. Who knows how long this drive will be.
"What are we going to do" Dylan muttered pulling on the doors as the engine of the van roared to life.
"Pray to god a floater is stupid enough to try and high jack this van, and finds us and then skins us to sell it at a gas station after he eats what little meat we have on our bones" I muttered closing my eyes feeling a migraine come on.
Dylan stifled a laugh, "hopefully before we arrive at one of the vile buildings" I added, popping open one of my eyes to see Dylan trying to see out of the crack in the door.
"Yeah, being skinned and eaten dose sound like a better option at this point" he said looking back at me with a slight smile.
"I'm not joking" I said leaning over to rest my forearms on my thighs, giving Dylan a sideways glance.
"I'm not either" he said laughing.
"Where do you think they took Lilly" Dylan asked his smile falling. I didn't have the heart to tell him, they probably shot her. It was the last piece of mom we had left, and they took it. Like they took everything else.
"Probably in another van"
"Insects"
Mine and Dylan's head snapped to the other side of the van where a small cage lay. The van was too dark to see what the cage held, but it could talk. So it must be human.
"What the fuck" Dylan whispered coming over to stand next to me.
"It has to be human" I whispered as I slowly walked over to the cage. I keeled down to see a little girl huddled in the corner with her arms rapped around her legs, trying to make herself seem smaller. Her brown her was a tangled mess that hid most of her face.
"Pamela?" I whispered. The little girl jumped towards the bars reaching out words me. I slowly reached my hand out to hers to touch, cautious of getting bit. Again. When she didn't bare her teeth I let my hand touch hers gently. She sighed at the contact.
"What are you doing here? What happened in the heap once we left? And why the hell are you in a cage?" I asked my voice getting louder as I spoke, anger laced in my words.
Pamela just stared at my hand in hers, she looked up at me with big doe eyes before she gently let go of my hand except for my pointer finger. She gently swayed it back and forth.
"Pamela, what happened" I asked gently.
"Was. Attacked" she whispered still playing with my finger.
"By the vile's?" I asked, feeling an angry tug at my finger. That must mean a yes.
Dylan keeled down beside me looking over at the girl. Once Pamela made eye contact with the man behind me she bared her teeth and hissed. Dylan raised his hands in the air in surrender. Pamela kept hissing until Dylan backed away a couple of steps.
