His body ached and didn’t want to move. He could lay there and wait for death to take his soul, or he could start to move. It was pain that made him stop in the process of getting up. The only thing that felt painless was his eyes looking around at the utterly terrifying image. Cornering him was huge waves of flames swaying left and right. Mark also looked at the flooring at the far-end and saw a giant cloud of black smoke deteriorate into an explosion of blazing red flames.

Mark quickly got to his feet and tried to look at the flames around him. It was hard to see even the smallest of embers in the black-smoke-filled room, but it was even more difficult moving around the room. The black smoke that got in Mark’s eyes started to feel like someone was pouring salted water onto his dry eyes.

Loud terrified screams started to sound off, even though Mark couldn’t tell where it was coming from, it told him that they were in horrible pain. Mark took his first step, the first step to escape the ticking time-bomb, that step almost made him fall down a flight of stairs.

In the reach of his touch, Mark could feel a slanted railing that went down with the flight of stairs. As the black smoke with tiny embers started to burn Mark’s face, he quickly started to dash down the burning stairs. On the last step, Mark tripped and quickly fell onto the floor. He rolled on the floor, and then he soon pushed himself up. Right next to him was a window that showed the other building he could have been in.

Mark walked next to the window that showed the image of the tower. It was showing a grueling picture of the tower in flames and the smoke rising up into the sky that left guilt in Mark’s heart. Tiny dots fell from the windows of that tower. Mark’s eyes couldn’t tell what they were or what it was. The black smoke that got in Mark’s eyes made it impossible for him to see even his hands. Mark started to fan the smoke with his hands and his eyes started see clearer without the stinging blur.

When another dot fell from the window, Mark could tell that it was a man who held onto his wife as they fell down the tower, crying because of no hope. Mark quickly turned his eyes to another person who fell, and another. Mark felt like his eyes were playing an insensitive trick on him. He stood there as he saw hundreds of people jump out of the window. Seconds later, He saw a dot fly towards the building. Mark’s eyes widened and he blindly ran through the smolder and inferno that surrounded him.

A body that laid on the floor had made Mark trip again, but that didn’t stop him. He quickly got up and started to sprint to the stairs, if he could find them. Right in front of him was a wall that Mark made his hand slide across. After sliding his hand across the wall for several seconds, Mark’s fingers came across a knob to a door which burned Mark’s hand. His hand twisted the burning knob and then Mark shoved the door. The door flung open to the stairs that spiraled down and up.

When Mark looked at the stairs, he saw that parts of the steps were missing. Some had cracks in them and some were not even touched. Step after step, Mark felt worried that he might fall down the cracked staircase. As Mark when down the flight, he went down another and another until he saw the staircase completely gone.

It was about a ten foot drop and it was the only way down. He backed up a little, until his heel reached the wall of the step, and darted forward. The cool breeze from the fall felt relaxing to his burned face. The heart of Mark’s started to beat rapidly as he fell down. He bent his legs in mid-air as he fell from the great height. His legs were angled so that he could withstand the impact of the fall.

A shocking wave went up his feet to the middle of his thigh, and from that, Mark felt relieved when he felt his legs on solid ground. A loud crack startled Mark, he felt as if he was going to fall down. Mark tried to take another step. But, as the cracks grew louder and more rapid, he fell through the flooring that contained his weight.
