I walked into the physician's office, fidgeting with the strap of my purse. I go to the front desk, telling them that I'm here for an appointment with Dr. Green. They tell me to take a seat and wait in the lobby. I pull out my phone to text my husband of 6 months, Ryan.
To: Hey Ry, at the doctors' office right now
From: Sorry to make you go, its just that I had that stomach bug and I wanna make sure that you didn't catch it!
To: Its good to take precautions sometimes. Thank you for sending my stubborn ass
From: Of course, that's 1 reason why I love you :) See you when you get home <3
"Mrs. Magee" I look to the nurse holding my file. I stand up, shoving my phone in my bag and hurrying over. The nurse escorts me back to patient room #3. I set down my bag as they take my height and weight down. After the nurse leaves, I try to calm myself down. Ryan is probably right. This is probably just a bug or the flu or something like that. I feel a small wave of nausea as the doctor walks in.
"Hello Mrs. Magee, what brought you here to see me today." She leans against the counter with a clipboard and pen in hand.
"Well, I've been nauseous and very tired recently. I threw up yesterday and then again this morning. My husband had a stomach bug and wanted me to come in and make sure I didn't have the same thing."
"Hm," she pauses with a thoughtful look, writing on the clipboard. "We'll take a swab of your throat and a urine sample, just for good measure." That's kinda strange, but I'm not a doctor. I push my suspicions thoughts aside. They take the swab of my throat, which is very uncomfortable, then I head to the bathroom and well, you know. They take everything to run tests as I sit in the room. I play a game on my phone for a couple minutes. Feeling anxious, I decide to call Matt, not wanting to bother Ryan.
"Hey Matt, what's up."
"Heyo, i'm just playing some Katamari. Are you alright? You sound worried."
"I'm at the doctors off-"
"What's wrong?!"
"I think I caught Ryan's bug, so I'm getting some tests done."
"What kind of tests?"
"A throat swab and a urine test."
"Urine test? Ryan didn't get one of those."
"Really? They said it was just in case. I felt that it was strange too, but she's the doctor."
"I don't know if this is, um, accurate, but don't they test urine for women if they think-"
"If they think what, Matt?"
"Do you think that you could be... pregnant?" It all clicks into place. We started trying for a baby a little while ago but I didn't think it would happen for a while. My heart starts to race. I look down at my wedding ring ad a tear falls down my cheek. I quickly wipe it away and compose myself.
"I mean," my voice shakes. "Maybe..." I hear a knock at the door as the doctor and the nurse walk in. I give a gesture as to say 'give me a moment'. They nod. "I'll talk to you later."
"Let me know," he chuckles. "Bye" I hang up the phone.
"So, the swab come out clear, but we have some other news." Oh my god, Matt was- "You're pregnant." My eyes well up with tears and I don't worry about letting them fall. "Congratulations!" They grin at me. I get up and shake hands with both of them, grateful for everything the have done. "You can go now. I do suggest seeing a gynecologist too. Have a nice day!"
I wipe my tears of joy away and blow my nose before leaving the office. I drive home as fast as I can, staying in the speed limit of course. I can't wait to tell Ryan. I hope he'll be as joyful as I am.
I unlock the door, and speed in. "Hey baby!" I set my purse down and try to keep my smile away, not wanting to raise suspicion.
"Hello," he stands up and walks over to me. He pulls me into a strong embrace. I feel my eyes tear up but blink them away. "What did the doctor say?" He looks in my eyes, and I stare deeply in to his. I pull away a small distance so that I can see his reaction.
"They ruled out the stomach bug which is good." I mess with the waistband of his basketball shorts. "But they found out something else was the problem." He looks at me with worry. He's clearly afraid to have me get sick and die, which not many people have ever been. "I'm, well..." I pause, taking a deep breath to compose my emotions. "I'm pregnant."
"W-what? Really?" I nod as I start crying once again. He picks me up spinning around yelling and laughing. I laugh, telling him to be careful, to which he immediately takes caution. I look at his handsome facial features, taking it all in. He's crying more than I am, sniffling consistently. He pulls me to him and pushes his body to mine. I stroke the side of his face, pulling him into a kiss that I will always remember.
