"Breaking News -The Sudford Times Headquarters was attacked today, by a mysterious group of supers, they remained unidentified and unknown. Police rushed to the scene but by the time they arrived the chaos was over and the three supers terrorising the citizens were already cuffed and detained by a super calling himself Blazee. This just goes to show that the police force is now second best to these highly skilled superheroes-"
The television was abruptly turned off as the sound of rustling keys echoed through the living room. Aubrey turned to face the front door as her dad walked in, his thick brown hair a complete mess as if he'd ran his hands through it continuously. She moved her eyes over his untucked shirt and loose tie, all portraying the look of a worn out and tired man.
He quickly removed his gun belt and hat, placing them on the rack next to the door and unpinned his badge as well, scoffing at the small piece of metal as he did so.
When he first got into the police business, his appearance would've suggested he had a busy field day in the city, chasing and capturing criminals with no time to rest. However, nowadays it seemed he didn't get to do any of that, most of the exciting work was done by supers and they left the officers to fill out paperwork at the station.
This is one of the reasons Aubrey quickly shut off the news when he walked through the door as lately, the media have been criticising police officers. Claims were circling around that they're no longer needed in the crime-fighting industry due to the increase in supervillains who outmatched their human ability. It seemed superheroes were the only match for these criminals as they had similar if not more adaptive super skills.
Aubrey stood from her place in the living room to greet her father, forcing a cheerful smile onto her face as she tried to ignore the tired heavy green eyes that stared back at her as she did so.
"Father," she greeted him politely, assessing his mood cautiously while she did so, not wanting to anger him further than she assumed he already was. He continued to look at her in silent distress and so she decided it was her duty to distract the poor middle-aged man.
"Dinners in the oven, it should be ready in less than half an hour," and yet she still didn't get a reply from him. Nevertheless, she carried on, "lasagne, your favourite!" and she rejoiced happily inside when she noticed her father's lips lift slightly from the frown they were once in. A frown she was seeing more and more each day.
"Thank you, Aubrey. I'll go get changed and then come back down", not waiting for a response he brushed passed her and wandered up the stairs.
She sighed, relieved that their first encounter of the evening was a pleasant one despite the horrible day she knew he'd had a work. There have been many days in the past where her father's anger towards the outside world was echoed onto her and she was left terrified of the man she once looked up to.
Shaking off the images of previous experiences in her head she went back into the living room to clean up the papers and homework she was working on before he'd gotten home.
A ding brought her out of her thoughts, drawing her to the kitchen as the timer she'd set let her know that the lasagne was done. The kitchen was filled with the glorious scent of cheese and pasta sending Aubrey into a dream-like state as she drifted over to the oven and pulling out the piping hot dish.
Leaving it on the side to cool slightly, she set the table and poured a beer for her father, knowing he'd want one, as he always seemed to drink heavily after a rough day.
He reappeared then in his tracksuit, appearing more relaxed than he had all day. Following him was her little brother, Daniel who was absorbed in the game he was playing on the family tablet. They served themselves and sat quietly, enjoying the meal, an old family recipe that could never go wrong in their house.
The three didn't really speak throughout dinner, a growing silence surrounded them but neither really noticed as it was what had been considered normal in their household for a few years.
"So you're starting senior year tomorrow," her dad began, looking at her as she picked at the leftovers on her plate. Excitement filled her as she nodded enthusiastically in response. Unlike most, Aubrey loved school. Mostly because she was really good at it. On the honour roll, she enjoyed all of her classes, even if she believed she struggled slightly in some of them.
Daniel not so much as he groaned at the words, "Don't remind me, dad," and scoffed his food before leaving the table to avoid more talk about school, making Aubrey roll her eyes at the preteen.
She stood up to clear the table and as she did so her father stood to pat her on the back. "Dinner was great, as always," he told her before leaving the kitchen, entering the living room where he will remain for the rest of the night, glued to the television.
After finishing the washing up, she decided to go to sleep early that night, knowing that it was the last time she'll feel well rested for the next few months.
By the time she'd showered and got into bed the sun was completely set and shadows have fallen over the distant city of Sudford that Aubrey's house overlooked, as she lived in the surrounding suburbs. On many occasions, she could be found on the bench by her window staring at the beautiful view of the city.
Her laptop gave off a ping just then, alerting her of a video request from her boyfriend, Tristan. They'd been dating for a few months now, having first started dating near the end of their previous year when he asked her to their end of year dance.
Tristan was a good boyfriend, always giving her attention and taking her out on dates, being the captain of the football team meant he ha many friends and their groups overlapped, meaning they would usually hang out with each other due to their friends anyway.
Aubrey rejected the video request, however, messaging him with an apology, stating she just wanted to get a good night's sleep before school tomorrow. Tristan responded almost instantly, saying it was alright and that he'd see her when he picked her up tomorrow morning. With that, they wished each other goodnight and Aubrey fell into a semi-peaceful sleep.
This is a bit different than my HP fanfic, but I wanted to write my own original story, so here it goes!!Its only a first draft but I hope you enjoy :)
