"Okay, settle down everyone and welcome to your senior year!" Mr Teese called to the class, shutting the door behind him. He turned and greeted the class with a huge grin on his face, clapping his hands together once and turning through the notes on his desk.

"I'm going to be truthful with you guys, this class is going to be very challenging. But you were the ones who chose science so" with a shrug he turned to the board to write up his name.

Aubrey turned to Malcolm and whispered quietly "He seems far too happy about the first day," and the boy leaned in to respond, "teachers don't have lives outside of school, this is the most social interaction he's had in months!" She tried to contain her laughter but was quite unsuccessful.

"I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves so far. Hope that doesn't change after I give you the first assignment", Mr Teese gave them a stern pointed look, making the rest of the class to glance at the two of them.

"Sorry Teese, carry on," Malcolm waved him on, nodding casually at him, causing a few of the girls at the front to giggle. Aubrey wasn't sure how the boy had that confidence to speak back to a teacher like that, but at least Mr Teese wasn't too strict. The young teacher just shook his head at the boy before turning back to his computer, a smirk on his lips.

Malcolm winked at the girls, leaning back on the stool with a smug look on his face, crossing his arms.

"This year we're going to be focusing on creating lab reports, both individual and group work. Before you ask, no you will not be picking these groups I will be putting you in groups that I believe will suit you the best," groans filled the room as people slouched in disappointment - Teese's words interrupting them while they were glancing at their friends, preparing to make their own groups.

Aubrey wasn't too worried about this because she got on with most people and knew that whoever she was paired with, they would ace the lab reports. That could also be because it's a high-performance class, where all the students had achieved high grades at the end of last year.

Mr Teese stood from where he was perched against his desk and started to rearrange the seating arrangements that people had automatically placed themselves in.

"Miss Delacruz, over here, please. Next to her - Mr Hansen," she tuned out after learning of her new seat and strolled over to the right-hand side of the room where her new lab station is placed.

She sat down and rested her bag on the side of the metal table. The view out the window caught her eye then and she found herself lost as she gazed outside, not even paying attention as the seat next to her screeched, indicating that someone had sat down next to her. The science rooms were on the top floor of the main building, meaning they got a really nice view of the city.

A small tap on the back of her head ripped her out of the zone she was in, so she turned around, noticing the scrunched up paper on the floor. Glancing up she noticed Malcolm waving at her from his seat at the back of the room.

Scooping up the paper she unravelled it to read the words scribbled on the page.

Unlucky. You got the weird kid.

That's when she realised the person sitting next to her could read the note - she turned to them and her eyes met with a pool of jade green. The boy raised his head from the page and made eye contact with her quickly before turning away, an uninterested look on his face.

Guilt flooded through her as she scrunched the paper back up, throwing it back to Malcolm shaking her head at the smirking boy. Not Cool - she mouthed to him.

Her partner had already immersed himself in the instructions written on the board at the front of the room, and let his messy black fringe fall over the side of his face - blocking her from his view.
