Aubrey's alarm woke her up way too early in her opinion. Crawling out of bed at 6 am was something that she'd have to get used to as the year went on.
As she got dressed she heard her father leave for work, early to the station as the police cruiser pulled out of the driveway. This meant it was up to her to get her brother up and ready for school, the most challenging part of the day.
She crept up to the door with the huge 'no entry' sign on it, but after knocking a few times and receiving no reply she entered, not expecting to see the walls covered in posters and newspaper headlines. Images of supers surrounded her and pictures of recent and old crimes scattered around the room. It shocked her completely to see all of these clippings, and she was sure her father hadn't seen this yet.
Daniel was stirring slowly, groaning as she opened the curtains and let the light into the room for what was probably the first time in weeks. As soon as he saw her standing there he flung himself from the bed, his worried eyes fluttering around. "What are you doing in my room?!? Get OUT!!" he shouted, waking up quickly.
Despite him trying to push her out, she forced her way back in, walking over to the clipboard he had above his desk, viewing the magazine photos and sketches that he'd drawn of various supers. "Daniel what is all of this?" she asked still in shock.
'Nothing! Just LEAVE!" his whining voice filled her ears as he carried on putting all his weight on her.
Knowing they had limited time as it is she decided to cooperate and leave "fine but we're talking about this after school. Get ready, Tristan's driving us. and he'll be here soon"
Not listening to his grumbling in reply, she grabbed her bag from the room and went downstairs to grab some breakfast.
As the toast popped a car horn sounded from outside, alerting her of Tristan's presence. Daniel ran downstairs and out the door before she could say anything to him, straight into the backseat of Tristan's black BMW. The boy fist bumped the teen before pulling out his video game and immersing himself in a digital world.
She sat in the passenger seat and turned to give Tristan a small peck on the cheek. "Greetings beautiful, how are you on this fine morning?" the boy was very preppy for the first day of school but she was starting to feel the same way as excitement bubbled up inside of her.
"So, to Sudford Middle first?" Tristan exclaimed making Aubrey nod in reply, smiling sweetly in thanks to the boy for driving her brother to school as well. She glanced back at Daniel while on the drive over, the car filled with soft music, but the boy wasn't paying her any attention, leaving his focus on the device in his hands, even as they pulled up to the front gates of the middle school.
Daniel left the car in a hurry, sprinting up the front steps and entering the building quickly. Aubrey turned to Tristan who was already looking at her, "Sorry about him, it was a bit tense this morning," she explained, embarrassed at Daniel's lack of respect for Tristan.
"That's fine, he's almost a teenager now, it's bound to happen" he comments, checking his phone before taking off down the road, Sudford High being only a short drive from the Sudford Middle School. "Yeah but you'll never guess what I found in his room today," and she explained the posters to Tristan.
"Damn. Does your dad know?" he asks, knowing about her father's hatred for supers. "Of course not, god forbid what he'd do to Daniel if he found out. I'm not telling," Aubrey finally let out her worries about her brothers new found admiration for supers, knowing that it could only end badly for the family's already damaged relationship.
Tristan didn't respond, before he could a boy about their age pulled out in front of their car on a bicycle, making Tristan swear before hitting the brakes hard.
"Watch where you're going, IDIOT!" Tristan yelled spitefully after rolling down the window. The boy barely glanced back at them before taking off quickly into the parking lot, chaining his bike in the Sudford community bike shed.
"Stupid fucking freaks blocking the drive" Tristan was grumbling to himself as he 'found' a parking spot next to the entrance that just so happens to always be available for him despite the rest of the parking lot being filled to the brim. Even he knows that being the captain of the football team means that he got privileges, making him Sudford High's pride and joy.
Aubrey stayed quiet throughout Tristan's complaints, only stopping him when they were parked so that they could get out of the car and find their friends. She knew it was wrong to insult others especially since that boy had technically done nothing wrong, except irritate Tristan, which isn't hard to do.
They strolled into school, Tristan's arm around her shoulders as he leads her towards the large group that were standing around watching them wander over.
"Ey finally! Tristan showing off his new meat?" one of the boys, Jake, called out making the girls of the group giggle as they approach. Tristan smirks at him before dipping Aubrey and giving her a passionate kiss. She giggles at his expressive behaviour but a part of her dropped as she felt objectified at the comments being made by Tristan's fellow football buddies.
The entire time they stood chatting to their friends, catching up on the holidays, Tristan didn't remove his arm from around her and even tightened his hold on her if she spoke to one of her male friends for too long, or laughed at one of their jokes.
She tried to brush it off, thinking he was still in a grumpy mood from the biker but wasn't too impressed with his jealous attitude. Aubrey hoped he wouldn't act like this all the time when they were at school as he had nothing to worry about when it came to her relationship with other boys.
Finally, the warning bell rang, making the group disperse as they took off in different directions, all taking various different classes around campus. Malcolm, one of Tristan's closest friends and one of the nicest in the group was in her biology class, and so after promising Tristan that he'd 'watch her' they left together.
"I've never seen Tristan so happy before," Malcolm comments as they walked through the corridor towards the science department, people scurrying around them to get to class quicker.
"Really," she comments, smiling politely as she'd never had a proper conversation with this guy before.
"Yeah, I can tell by how protective he is around you already! You've caught his attention that's for sure," the words not comforting her really as they noticed Mr Teese, their biology teacher for the year, greeting people at the door of the lab.
Their talk was over, but her thoughts ran wild as they took their seat. For some reason, Malcolm's words didn't make her feel giddy and happy. Instead, she was feeling a certain amount of dread - even Malcolm noticed Tristan's tight behaviour, and it's only been a few months of dating. She was scared to find out what would happen as things got more serious.
