You're an idiot, she laughed as she signed the words at Josh.
Yes, but I'm your idiot, he grinned as he signed back.
Her sign language wasn't fluent, but she was getting better. It was warm and they were lying in bed with the sun streaming into the room. Florida was beautiful, the water was warm, the beaches spectacular and he was there. The summer season was in full swing, pun intended, and the boys were dancing to full auditoriums. Goliath was as popular as ever and Cogan had started to talk about the next movie, despite Josh's negativity.
She was going to miss this. She was going to missing being with him like this. Time was running out for them. She knew it wouldn't last forever but she didn't expect it this. She'd thought they would have more time to be just Josh and Bee. But that wasn't how it was going to happen.
She looked at him watching her and decided that she shouldn't make plans anymore. All her plans ultimately ended in failure. Her promotion vanished, her career was put on hold, her ambitions became irrelevant, and now her time with Josh, just Josh, was coming to an end. She was going to miss lying in his arms thinking about nothing but how much she loved him.
Too much had happened since that day in Boston. Yes, she'd given herself to Josh. She'd let herself fall in love with him. But that wasn't all that she'd given him.
When she had lost her job at MS&T it had set wheels in motion. Her Green Card had been sponsored by the firm and was contingent on her keeping that employment. Now that she was unemployed her right to stay here was no longer valid. She had looked for other work and had spoken to other firms, but securing a Green Card wasn't an easy task. She would have to return to New Zealand and re-apply, she couldn't just transfer. The Department of Immigration had called and had given her a deadline to leave.
But that was only the tip of the iceberg.
She couldn't delay telling him anymore. It would soon be obvious, and she didn't want him to find out from someone else. She had to tell him and trust that he was ready to hear it.
"You know that I love you," she started.
"Marry me," his voice croaked out.
"What?" she looked at him, "What did you say? You know you aren't supposed to be speaking."
She had noticed that his voice was getting worse. After New York she'd taken back to his specialist. They did some tests and the doctors had told him that his voice had deteriorated. The more he used it the great the chance was that he would lose it altogether. He was given strict instructions to not to talk.
You heard me, he smiled with a hopeful glint in his eyes, Marry me Bee.
"I'm not sure you understand," she forced a laugh, "It's not that simple."
He titled his head to the side then sat on the side of the bed. He lifted his jeans off the floor, pulled something out of the pocket then dropped them back to the carpet. Then he twisted around so that he was kneeling on one knee in front of her. He was completely naked but, in his hand, he held a small black box.
"Josh," she said warily, "What are you doing?"
"Marry me," his voice was worse.
"You aren't supposed to talk," she ignored the box as she growled at him.
If this is the last words I ever speak, it would be worth it. Marry me Belinda Compton, be my wife.
"You know, don't you," she narrowed her eyes at him. "Who told you?"
Drew, he grimaced, But, that's not why I'm asking you this, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy. This isn't about the visa. This is about me and you.
"I'm going to kill Drew," she growled.
Forget Drew, he opened the ring box exposing the huge diamond on the plain gold band, Say yes.
"Josh," she said his name slowly.
Belinda, I'm not going to let you get away from me again. The last two months have been the best in my life. I know that I don't have to do this, I want to do this. I love you and I want you to be mine in every way possible. I want you to wear my ring and take my name. I want to introduce you as my wife and take you into my bed every night. And one day, when we are ready, I want to have children with you.
"There's a problem with that," she grimaced.
Problem? No, there are no problems. I can't live without you. I need you. I want you to be mine. Marry me, we can sort everything out together.
"It's more complicated than that," she frowned and reached over and pulled out a piece of paper from the drawer in the bedside table. "I'm sorry, Josh. But you don't have a choice. This is out of both of our hands."
Why! I need you! We are not doing this again Belinda. I can get Sam to sort out immigration. With a marriage certificate they can't deport you.
"Josh!" she laughed interrupting his rant, "You talk too much!"
She kissed him and showed him the piece of paper. The image was a black and white, grainy picture. He looked at it confused and then he saw the writing on the side of the picture. His eyes widened, and he looked at her with the most beautiful expression of absolute surprise and delight.
"You have to marry me now," she kissed him, "Or my father will be flying over here with his shotgun in his carryon!"
He was off his knees now and was on the bed next to her. He rested his hand on her abdomen, his eyes were wide as his mouth moved rapidly.
"See," she whispered at her midriff, "It's not so hard to slay Goliath, even you can do it."
But, he signed but his hands weren't working properly. He looked at her once more, his eyes searching hers, then his face lit up and his lips curled into the most brilliant smile she'd ever seen. He pulled her into his arms and held her like she was the most precious thing in his life.
"Oh," she laughed against his skin as he cradled her, "And that's a yes from both of us!"
