Chapter Six: My Choice?
Song for this chapter: “Little Talks” by Of Monsters And Men
“You aren’t going to do that.” A moment ago, he looked shocked, maybe even a little disappointed, but now he just stared at me flatly.
The way he said that sentence made me feel a little offended. If I said I was going to do something…then I was going to do it. “Oh yeah?” I challenged. “Watch me.”
His look didn’t waver. “If you don’t do it…I’ll just tell everyone at this school who you are. Then they’re going to ask you for advice whether you’re hiding behind a computer screen or not.”
For the first time, I realized he was blackmailing me, and I didn’t like it. “They wouldn’t believe you.”
“You wanna bet?” Trent smirked, as if he had this all pre-planned. “If I told them that you were Mickey and that you didn’t want to take over the responsibilities, don’t you think they’d believe me after you haven’t updated your Mickey blog thing in a few weeks?”
I gnawed on my lower lip. He was right. Before he knew, I could’ve let the whole Mickey situation die down. But now…since he knew…no matter what decision I made, I would end up having to give advice…one way or the other. Not to mention the hate that would come with being the new Mickey.
“I don’t want to be Mickey,” I confessed, not even bothering to hide the gloomy tone in my voice.
Trent shook his head and said, “Why not Ana? From what I’ve heard…being Mickey is an opportunity some people at this school would kill for.”
“I know, I know. But why me? Why would the old Mickey choose someone like me? Someone who doesn’t like Mickey? Why choose someone who pretty much loathes the whole program?” Saying those words out loud made me feel good. I was able to talk to someone about what I was feeling. I could voice my thoughts to someone…even if that someone was just using me for entertainment.
He shrugged. “I don’t know, Ana. Maybe Mickey just thought you were the right one…?”
“Well, I’m not. And that Mickey was stupid.” I snapped.
Trent was about to answer me, when the sound of our teacher’s voice interrupted us. Our teacher, Mr. Cole was starting class.
After a brief stare down between us, we finally parted ways. He went to go to the teacher to ask where he should go, and I went to my normal spot, right next to Jenna. She must’ve gotten out of the bathroom while we were still arguing.
I tried to push the thoughts of me having to be Mickey aside, during Gym, but I failed miserably. Every time my eyes landed on Trent, even if I just brushed past his features, the thought would just flood back it. Because of this, Gym went by painfully slow.
In fact, the rest of the school day went by super slow.
For the next few days…I still didn’t go on the Mickey website, and I managed to dodge Trent when he wanted to talk to me one on one. He had begun sitting with Heather and I during lunch, which by the way, Lena didn’t look too happy about.
Trent hadn’t told anyone yet…well at least I didn’t think he did. If he had, it hadn’t come up in any of my classes.
It was now Friday. And I’d have the next two days to think of a plan to evade Trent.
