You loved books, it wasn't hard to especially when it had a really thrilling plot. That's why you applied for the job at your local book store. It was a small and quaint shop in the middle of Winnipeg. In fact it was actually quite crazy how a place in Winnipeg could ever carry that type of presence, but this shop was everything from a bookstore dream. A shelf out front with all the latest arrivals, and in the back the books were sorted by category. Although your favorite spot was the back corner with the beanbag chairs allowing anyone to curl up with a book whenever. Today you were working with an employee you had yet to meet. His name was Corey or something like that, you couldn't really remember too well. You headed into the shop to make sure everything was set up for the day, and a few minutes later another person walked in. He seemed to be carrying a book, some unrecognizable book of the color blue. He was wearing what appeared to be an nike polo with some khakis and sneakers. The guy seemed to look pretty normal, except he was smiling wider than anyone you had seen before on anyone. He must have been the other employee on duty with you today. "Hello" you couldn't help but say to the unknown guy. He turned to look at you headed in your direction. "Hello, you must be the new employee, boss Maurice said we had a new worker." he said then continued "I'm Cody" he then held out his hand for you. You stuttered for a second shocked by his ease at friendliness, he seemed naturally cool. "I'm Y/N" you replied back to him while accepting his handshake. You began to turn away from him to finishing organizing the stacks before the shop opened. While you were doing that Cody went behind the counter and pulled out his phone, however it wasn't for himself. He was plugging his phone into the aux cord. Next thing you knew he was playing some alternative music through the business speakers. In that way your boss was super chill, he let the workers play their choice of music during their working hours. You turned to him as you recognized the song coming through the speakers. After all you had to admit his music taste was pretty good, at the moment a twenty one pilots song was playing through the sound system. Although the music was playing for the store, it wasn't loud enough for you to not hear him singing along to the song. You smiled at Cody and couldn't help but spark a more proper conversation than the one you had earlier. "So, you listen to this type of music?" you asked him slightly shocked. He looked up from the cash register, momentarily stopping his lip syncing. "Yeah I listen to this all the time, although some of my friends don't understand how this can be my pump up music." he said, beginning to go on a tangent at the end. You looked at him in fascination, "Pump up music for what?" you asked curious as to why he would need music to get him hyped. Just from first impressions he seemed like the type of guy who was hyper, so why need to get even more hyped than that? "I play hockey, and it's kind of a ritual thing." he said while rubbing the back of his neck. You lit up inside, "You play hockey? I love hockey, although I don't get to watch it as I would like to." you said with excitement in your voice. He too lit up, it was very clear you both grew up in Canada, arguably the most dominant sport in the country. Cody bent down from where he was standing behind the check out to grab a book. It looked like it was the same book he had brought in with him. "Actually I'm currently reading a book about the jets too." he said while his cheeks began to tint a light shade of pink. You thought in your head, and did have to admit this coworker Cody, even though you hadn't met him fully until now was pretty adorable. The more you thought about it you recognized that book, during your shift last week it was quiet so you read in the chairs that you absolutely loved. That book was a newer arrival and you had read it during your shift, and you knew that it was a good book. It was a book written by a new found author, Morgan Frost. "I read that book last week." you told him while pointing to the book he set on the counter. "Really? It was a new release, I knew I just had to read it. Especially since Frosty was on my case the past month that I had to support his work." he stated as if it was no big deal he was friends with a really great author. "Wait, you're friends with Frost?" you asked completely shocked. Mitch came from around the counter to unlock the doors, as it was finally opening time. "Yeah, we play on the same hockey league team." he replied while walking back to where you were.
You guys continued talking about books and your friends throughout the day when it wasn't busy. Luckily for you guys it was a Monday, which for the store was one of the slower times of the week. Unlike most of the people in the week you have to put up with, Cody seemed different. You could actually have a conversation with him because you felt like it, not because you knew you had to. Hockey was a super easy common ground for you both. I mean for most Canadians it typically is, but to find a Winnipeg fan that wasn't self absorbed was hard and thankfully Cody didn't fit into that category. By the end of the day, you had talked so much hockey and each others personal lives. It felt as if you knew him like the back of your hand. You headed over to lock the doors, so you could get everything all cleaned up before you headed home. However that didn't take to long, seeing as the store wasn't busy today so there wasn't much destruction. It also helped that there weren't any little kids today, they just for whatever reason love touching everything in sight. You headed to the backroom to grab your coat so you could head out, and you were surprised to see Cody standing in the doorway. "Hey I had lots of fun at work today, and I would love to chat hockey with you again. Would I be able to have your number so we can hang out, but maybe this time not at work?" he asked you shyly. Which to say you found a bit funny and couldn't help giggle, and nod your head up and down at him. You guys had gone into personal aspects of your life all day and that didn't make him nervous at all, yet somehow asking for your number created nerves. You proceeded to grab your phone from your pocket and hand it over to him so you could have his number, Cody gave you his so you could do the same. After trading numbers you put your coat on and headed began to head out, but not without asking him something first. "Hey do you maybe want to get some fast food with me? I am starving and you must be too." you asked him secretly hoping he would say yes. "Oh uh, uh yeah sure." Cody responded briefly stuttering. Off you both went to the local fast food joint across the street called 'Master Maxime' for some food. Oh how glad you were that you applied for the job and got the position for something you truly enjoyed. Not to forget to mention the fact your coworkers, especially one in specific was special.
