Chapter 7
My slumber is fitful, filled with horrible nightmares of Nazar taking over my body completely and I am trapped inside unable to get out. I wake up panting for breath…
“It’s just a dream Akalta… just a dream.”
“It was no dream…”
I slam my head into a tree and the sound echoes throughout my brain. I wince at the bruise it has left behind.
“You cannot get rid of me Akalta… never.”
“LEAVE ME ALONE NAZAR!”
“NO! This is who you’ve become… there’s no turning back.”
I pad along the dusty road that is cracked by many travelers, traveling their long, weary journey to hope, destiny, something I sorely need.
“Water, just one drop of water.”
I beg to the sky, but it gives none back, I drop my head in defeat. A rumble shakes my paws making my spine shudder.
“What is going on?”
A large shape is visible in the distance as the roaring sound gradually increases. My mind hurts with the noise… oh how it hurts..
“Make it stop!”
“Run!”
“What?”
“Run!”
After all those times listening an obeying Nazar, this time I stay planted to the shaking ground. A truck screeches to halt inches away from my quivering nose. A man dressed in dark black jeans and a ripped t-shirt opens the door to the truck. He kneels down on the ground holding out his hand for me to sniff. I take a step forward but making sure to keep my legs ready to bolt if needed.
“Easy boy I’m not going to hurt you.”
The man says with a smile before placing his hand on my head, rubbing right behind my ears. I let my leg pound the ground in pleasure. This man is so nice. I tell myself as I lean closer to him. Suddenly he slips a collar around my neck, and I try to pull away but he smiles before picking me up into his strong arms.
“My Halsta will just love you.”
He carefully walks over to his truck, pulling open the door with a sigh. I give my world that I once called home; one last look as he closes the door shut trapping me inside this truck of his. I let out a strangled yelp as I place my paws up on the window. A door opening beside me makes me jump a little, but once I see that same man my heart open up to let out a joyous bark. He laughs as he presses a button that makes the truck rumble. I back into the seat panic filling my lungs but the man reassures me by patting my ever so gently on the head.
“You will love Halsta… she’s an animal lover…”
I give up trying to figure out what is going on, and where I am going. So instead I sink into a peaceful nap, the most peaceful nap I’ve had in years.
