'Why didn't you tell me?'
'Why would I?'
Dick started, why would she? They weren't' close, they hadn't even known each other a month. So why did he feel this hurt that he hadn't known about this small detail about a complete stranger? 'I-I'm not sure.'
Bella's eyes softened a bit, they even looked a little sad as she looked back to her father, 'I did have a brother, but...I lost him.'
Dick inhaled, 'At the lab.'
Bella shook her head, walking towards the shuttered windows, the morning light streaming through in fragments, bouncing off her figure.
'In the forest. We were twins, a technical error since we were artificially "born". But the result was that I absorbed his would be abilities, leaving him powerless, but allowing me to become the first successful result.
'I had no control over it but still, I felt guilty, and I knew he wouldn't last long. So I tried to protect him, but the experiments took a harsher toll on him, and I was beginning to notice, one by one the others dropping out-'
'Drop out?'
Bella's eyes snapped to his, her tone was filled with disgust 'Die. That's what they called it in the lab. But those children were stronger than my brother, with abilities, so even with my protection he wouldn't be able to make it...'
'So you ran away.' Dick completed.
Bellas gaze lowered, she shifted her arm against the wall, allowing her cheek to rest on her shoulder. 'We made it far, father than the others did. But, like I said he was the weakest, he was injured and couldn't go on any further and they.. they were everywhere.' Her voice shook slightly. 'It was I leave and survive or we die together.'
So I left.' she chocked, cleared her through. 'Without him.'
Dick shifted a bit in his seat, then got up taking a step towards Bella. She snatched her hand away from wiping her eye in a quick flinch. A mix a fear and uncertainty clouded her eyes. Dick took another step
'What?-'
Dick gently wrapped his arms around her shoulders, she tensed at his touch. Her damp towel and hair made Dick shiver but he didn't break away.
'I'm sorry,' Dick whispered, tightening his hold, 'I'm so so sorry.'
She trembled slightly as she let out a shaky breath. Relaxing her body to mould into his, her face buried in his shoulder.
'So am I,' she whispered back, allowing silent tears to run down her face.
