Ash’s head flew up as he heard a faint couph. He quickly got up and padded to his fathers nest.
“Water...” He croked weakly. Ash nodded and grabbed a pad of moss. He turned towards the entrance and kicked off into a brisk run. He made sure to not wake anyone else as he made his way to the central pond, a large pool of water in the middle of his packs camp that filled from the underground waterways. Ash dipped the moss into the cool water before heading back to the den. He layed the moss down next to his father and curled up next to him as his father licked the water from the moss. With a sigh, Ash’s father drifted back to sleep. Ash gave a small smile and curled back up onto his bed.
”Goodnight dad.” He whispered before sleep once again took over.
”Ash! Hurry and get up!” Ash grumbled as his brother kept prodding his side.
“I’m up. You can stop.” He growled tiredly. The prodding stopped and he could hear his brothers steps as he walked towards the entrance. Ash stood up and stretched his back before joining his brother. He looked at his brother to see why he had stopped and followed his gaze to the other side of the clearing. A lean silver shewolf was talking with some of her friends by the hunters den. Ash returned his attention to his brother. He and his brother were pack guards. They would never be allowed to be a hunters mate. But he knew that Coalin knew so he kept his mouth shut and instead looked at the similarities between him and his brother. They both had sharp pointed ears, sharp eyes, large shoulders and paws, and they were both well built for combat. But there were also many differences. Where Coalin had light brown fur like their mother, Ash had dark grey and black coloured fur like their father. Coalin also had deep brown eyes while he had light blue. That was all Ash could decipher before a voice spoke in front of them.
”Hi Coalin! Hi... Ash.” It was the silver shewolf from before. Now that she was closer, Ash could see that she was not a hunter like he had originally thought, but rather a guard. She also held the strong build and pointed ears that was the common trait between them. Ash left out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. Of course his brother wasn’t stupid enough to fall for a hunter.
“Hi Crystal. How are you?” Coalin asked.
”And how did you know my name?” Ash asked with a tilt of his head. This seemed to amuse the shewolf.
”I’m very well, Coalin. As for how I know your name, Ash,” She turned her attention to Ash. “It’s my duty to know all the guards names, even the ones who have not yet started their training.”
”Why is that?” He asked.
”Because it’s my duty as the commander of the guards to know who all is and will be under my command. I also have to know everyone in my pack as the future Luna.” She explained. If Ash had been drinking water he would have been spitting it out in shock.
”Your the Alphas daughter?!” He exclaimed. Crystal laughed.
”Yes, I am. You would have found out when you started your training but as your brother is my...well...” Instead of saying what, she showed instead, liking Coalin passionately on his cheek.
