~Meredith Grace~
I wake up in a dark and cold hospital room.
My head is pounding and my right arm throbs in it's cast.
I look to my left and see a guy holding my hand.
He looks up at me, like he has known me for forever.
I slowly pull my hand from his, feeling odd.
Who is he? I've never seen him before.
He looks like a broken puppy dog when I retract my hand from his grip.
"Who are you?" I whisper.
"Grace....it's me Jason." He rushes to say.
"My name is Meredith Grace and I don't know you." I say.
"You have to remember me!" His voice cracks.
Something is pulling at the back of my mind but I can't put my finger on it.
He reaches for me again and I flinch.
I call for a nurse, having him in here is making my nerves go in overdrive.
He walks out of the room with tears brimming his eyes.
I watch as he slowly walks out into the hectic state of the ICU unit.
He quickly disappears into the crowds and my heart beat returns to normal.
My eye lids feel heavy and I drift to sleep.
~~~
I wake up to Mae crying and Max talking quietly but quickly in the distance.
I try to roll over but all the needles and casts prevent me.
I open one eye and slowly look around the room.
Mae is sitting on the floor, holding one of my stuffed animals and Max is pulling on his hair while he talks to mom.
Mae notices I'm awake immediately, she hollers with happiness and runs to the side of the hospital bed.
"Merie Grace!" She squeals!
"Hey baby." I smile at her.
"I missed you sissy." She says simply.
"I missed you too." I say back.
She climbs up into the bed and lays down next to me, snuggling into my neck.
A smile plays over my lips.
"Please never leave me, I thought I did something wrong and you were never coming back." Mae mumbles.
I feel tears prick my eyes.
"I would never leave you Mae." I manage to choke out.
She puts her arms around me and in a matter of seconds her breathing is regular and I can tell she is asleep.
Max is sitting on the couch, bags rim his eyes. He is in pajamas and has slippers on his small feet.
Mom walks over and smiles down at me.
"Grace, sweetie, how are you feeling?" Mom asks me.
"Never been better." I smirk.
She chuckles and brushes my hair out of my face.
I look up to her face and I notice her red eyes, with purple bags around them. Her lips are chapped and her hair is a knotted mess on top of her head. Her clothes are terribly wrinkled and her hands shake slightly.
"NO!" Max screams, making me jump.
I jerk my head to the direction of the yell, and I see Max clawing at his face, sweat glistening on his pale skin. His eyes are squeezed shut and he is shaking.
Mom runs over to him, trying to soothe him and Mae is crying in my arms.
After about 10 minutes of mom talking soothingly, Max settles down and now lies in moms arms.
Mae has fallen asleep in my lap again and my eyes are heavy with sleep.
~~
My heart is beating and sweat trickles down my neck. My head is in excruciating pain and my legs are numb. I try to swallow but my throat is unyielding.
Panic rises up, along with bile and I try to swallow it away.
A minute later Nurse Amber and Nurse Bailey scurry in and Amber lightly picks up Mae and lays her down on the couch.
They whisper quietly while rushing around the room.
I can't focus on anything and my vision is slowly fading to black.
Bailey and Amber start to move in slow motion and my eyes give out, leaving me in darkness.
