Mia stared out the window of the social services office watching the rain fall and trying to digest the fact that in a 24 hour span her entire world had been turned upside down. How could he possibly have found them? He was supposed to be back in Georgia where they left them. Not in cold, dreary Oregon. But he was here, he had found her mother and he had killed her, leaving her with nothing but fear and desperation as a friend.
Leo had done it, he had killed her mother. And Mia knew she was going to be next, but apparently social services would try and put a damper on his plans. They were shipping her off to live with some foster family in Texas. Damn them. Her social worker had been gone for 30 minutes and Mia soon grew restless. She paced back and forth on the cheap linoleum of the office floor. Her flight left tomorrow and she was really hoping to be able to see the one friend she made in her 7 months of being in Oregon before she had to be torn from her home she made here.
Aliyah had been the first and only person to talk to her when she started at James Helton High School in the middle of her Junior year. In all honesty it still shocked Mia till this day that Aliyah talked to her, she was one of those stunningly gorgeous and insanely popular girls. But Ali was totally down to earth, she was always there for Mia, willing to spend the night when Mia’s mom had to work the grave yard shift and could keep the best secrets. And Mia was gonna miss the hell out of her, she highly doubted that the social worker was going to let her go see her best friend and risk Leo seeing her.
Leo, a new subject entirely, Mia felt a surge of rage course threw her body when she thought about him causing her hands to ball into fists and automatically crash into the wall. Mia hissed in a breath threw her teeth and shook her hands as if he could shake out the pain. She really needed to quit doing that. Leo was her step father, her drunk and abusive step father. He had came into her life when she was 5 after her father had died of cancer. At first he was the most amazing man that she had ever met besides her real father, she had even began to call him Dad. The fairytale ended when she was about 14, something snapped in Leo and he started drinking and turning violent. He’d hit walls and throw things and soon those objects weren’t enough and he then started hitting Mia and her mother. When she was 16 they ran away from Leo, moved to Oregon near her mother’s hometown and they lived there in peace up until now.
“Mia? Are you alright?” The social worker said from behind her causing her to jump and spin around on her heel to face her.
She simply nodded. The social worker was a fairly young women, around her mid thirty’s with shoulder length blonde hair and bright blue eyes. In another situation Mia would have found her stunning but at the current moment she loathed the women. She knew it was wrong and that she wasn’t the one to blame but she was the women ripping her away from her life here and shipping her off to Austin, Texas.
Mia looked up when the social worker handed her information for her flight that leaves tomorrow.
“You’re flights tomorrow at 9, all of your things have already been shipped to the foster family, and the Andersons have been kind enough to take you in. They have a daughter that is in your grade and the same age as you, her names Arielle. Tonight you’ll be staying at one of our holding houses that are across the street. I’ve come to take you over there.” The social worker told her giving her a friendly smile and motioning to the door.
Mia nodded and briskly walked out the door and waited for the social worker to show her the rest of the way.
Once she was inside the holding house she immediately showered, changed into pajamas and went to bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow she was out like a light.
