Sighing heavily, Andy dropped her Prada on the kitchen counter. She paused in front of the refrigerator to stare at its contents, then scolded herself for her obvious delay tactics. Still, she grabbed a diet coke before closing the fridge door, if for no other reason than to justify her browsing.
She walked over to the back door and stared, wondered if she could pay Patch's mom a visit. She missed the woman, she's like her second mom other than her own. So with that she then grabbed her car keys and headed for the door and into Patch's home.
Like her own, Patch's house is big, modernized paris look kind of thing.
She then parked on the roadside and started for the gate.
"Let me in Conrad" she said in the intercom
"Miss Brooks? please do come in." Conrad replied
As soon as she entered the front doors, maids filled the room lining straight to greet her.
"Good Afternoon Miss Brooks it is a pleasure to see you here again after a long time." someone said behind her back.
Turning, she said "Well it really is a pleasure to be ba-, Oh my gosh! Lois I really missed you! How have you been!? "
Lois, Patch's personal butler replied "You've grown quite into a beutiful young lady Miss, I assure you that I am fine, still working ain't I?"
"Oh I'm sure you do, where's Patch's mom? I want to visit her." Andy said.
"Oh as usual Mrs.Ryans is out and working Miss. I'm surprised you're not here to visit Mr. Ryans." Lois replied
"Oh you know its just a second thought but I also do intend to visit him."
"Is that so? he's in his room, you should go Miss." Lois gestured at the top of the stairs
"Okie dokie Lois, its so nice to see you again." Andy answered then headed to the stairs.
Andy stopped short when she saw Patch at the doorway, to discover him removing one shoe with a swift, violent kick. His back was to her and he had already pulled his shirt off; Andy couldn't help but stare. The sun filtered through the tall window to illuminate the warm tanned skin of his back as he bent and pulled at a stubborn shoelace. With a quiet mutter he finally got it undone and kicked it into the shoe closet. As if freed from shackles instead of clothing, Patch's shoulders relaxed and he sighed noisily. His arms were lean and long.He stretched, flinging them out wide, his broad shoulders forming the top of a slender triangle that narrowed to his waist, where his jeans hung loosely at his hips. The angles of his back caught the sunlight and for a moment Andy fancied that she could see him with her on the beach walking side by side taking their time. She knew she should say something--announce her presence--but she hesitated.
When he placed his hands on his hips she was eyeing and lifted his face to the ceiling, Andy realized she'd better make some noise before he took something else off. She cleared her throat quietly.
Patch spun swiftly, visibly tense ."It's you," he said, sounding relieved. Then a strange look took over. "How long have you been standing there?"
"Not long," Andy said quickly.
"A minute?" Patch pressed. "Two?"
"Um, about one, I guess."
Patch shook his head. " And I didn't hear a thing." He dropped onto a nearby couch and pulled of a sock. "So, what brings you here?, want something from me?, or do you just wanna hang out? name it, Babe."
Patch said teasingly.
"Eww, first stop calling me Babe its annoying. Second I didn't come here for you I came here because I want to see your Mom but turned out she was still working so thought that I just pay you a visit as well. Besides I barely come here now so why not take a look around, right?"
"Yeah right, so much for reasoning." Patch said.
Andy stepped over and sat down next to him on the couch. They were almost close enough to touch, but the air between them might as well have been a granite wall.
"Patch?"
He turned to face her, but said nothing.
Not sure wether it was a mistake, Andy smiled and leaned forward, circling her arms around his neck."Hello," she said, her lips neat his ear.
He wrapped his arms around her, returning her greeting. She started to pull back, but he held on tighter, his hands begging her to stay. She didn't fight it--realized she didn't want to. After a few more seconds, he released her, but it was with obvious reluctance. "Hi," he said quietly.
"Listen," Patch said slowly, "I'm sorry this was all such a surprise for you."
"You could have told me."
" And what would you have said?" he asked.
Laurel started to say something, then closed her mouth and instead smiled guiltily.
"You'd have told me not to come, right?" Patch pressed.
Andy just raised one eyebrow
"So I coudn't tell you," he said with a shrug.
Andy reached down, grabbed the dog plushie, and began to pinch it all around. "Where have you been?" she asked.
"Mostly in Scotland, like I said in class."
"Why?"
It was his turn to feel guilty. "Studying"
"Studying for what?"
"To come back here."
"The whole time?" Andy said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
Patch nodded.
Andy tried to push away the hurt that instantly filled her chest. "You knew this whole time that you were coming back and you still left without saying good-bye?" She expected him to look ashamed, or at least apologetic, but he didin't, not this time.He met her eyes without blinking
"As opposed to waiting for you to come and tell me in person that you were choosing David instead of me and wouldn't be coming round anymore?"
She looked away, guilt crowding out her hurt feelings.
She pushed through the door and into the kitchen island, leaving it open for Patch, and walked over to the fridge, grabbing the first piece of fruit she saw.
Andy stood frozen, knowing he meant every word he said awhile ago. He misread her stillness as an invitation and leaned forward, his hand cupping her cheek.
"I missed you," he whispered, his breath light on her face. A gentle sigh escaped Andy's lips before she could stop it and as Patch drew nearer her eyes began to close on their own.
"Nothing's changed Patch," she forced herself to whisper, his face only a hair's breadth from hers. " I made my choice."
His hand stilled, but she sensed the slightest tremor at his fingertips. She watched him swallow once before smiling wanly and pulling back.
"Sorry.I overstepped."
He turned away from the kitchen, then paused. He lifted his hand and touched the necklace he had given her when they first met-- angel wings, which hung on its silver chain. He smiled softly. "Im glad you still wear this."
