01. Believe

Everything starts from something

Kathryn listened to her iPod on her way to school in a school bus she took. It was her first day, as a junior. She waited so long for this day to come, since in just a year or two, she'll be graduating, and she'll be going to college, and be able to pursue her many dreams afterwards.

"Excuse me," Kathryn thought she heard someone talk to her so she removed her earphones and looked up. There she saw a tall guy, about her age. He had the skin tone, eyes, and nose just like hers. Mukhang maamo naman, Kathryn thought.

"May nakaupo ba dito?" The guy had a deep voice. He pointed at the seat behind Kathryn.

"Uhm, wala naman," Kathryn spoke shyly. She always finds herself so timid around boys.

"Pwedeng maupo?" He asked again, and Kathryn softly nodded.

As the drive kept on going, Kathryn couldn't help but look at the guy, a thing she does when she sees a guy and wants to know him more. Kathryn would like to talk to him, but then she thought, napaka-awkward naman nun.

Kathryn looked out the window and tried not to look at him again, but something made her do it all over again. She felt some weight on her shoulder and when she looked down, she saw the guy from earlier sleeping, with his head rested on her shoulder.

The guy moved an inch and woke up, leaving Kathryn no reason why he woke up. "Uhm..sorry kung nagising kita, masyado bang malakas ang tunog ng earphones ko? Um, masyado ba akong malikot? Sorry talaga ha, di ko sinasadyang gisingin ka!" Kathryn spoke quickly, almost leaving herself with no air.

The guy chuckled. "Chill! Wala kang kasalanan. Ganun lang kasi talaga ako pag nakakatulog habang bumabyahe, nagigising bigla." He smirked and looked away.

Kathryn looked away as well. Pinagmukha mong tanga ang sarili mo, Kath! Tanga! Tanga! Kathryn thought as she punched her head softly.

"Pst, miss, okay ka lang?" Kathryn turned around and saw the guy staring at her with a confused look on his face.

Kathryn quickly placed her hands down and tried hard to smile. "Huh? Oo."

"Sinusuntok mo kasi yung ulo mo," the guy replied.

Kathryn got nervous and she didn't know why. "Uhm.."

The guy chuckled again as the bus halted to a stop.

"Okay, bago kayo bumaba," the bus conductor said, "ito na nga pala yung daily bus niyo, ha. Kung male-late kayo sa bus stop na pinakamalapit sa inyo, mag-commute na lang kayo. Understood?"

The students nodded. "Makakababa na kayo," the conductor said and the students started going out.

Kathryn entered the gate and was greeted by her best friend, Julia. "Chandy!"

"Ano ka ba, Juls, alam mo naman ayokong tinatawag niyan," Kathryn replied with a giggle.

Julia smiled. "Niloloko lang naman kita eh. Punta na tayo sa classroom? Ilagay na natin bag natin dun bago magstart ang opening program." Luckily, Julia ang Kathryn were classmates.

The two went to their classroom and went to the field afterwards for the flag ceremony. The flag ceremony started off, and after 15 mnutes, it ended, and then the opening program starts.

It has always been like a tradition in their school to have an opening program during first day, as a way of welcoming everyone, especially the freshmen.

"Good morning, students! As another school year starts, sana gabayan tayo ng ating Panginoon at sana ay maging maayos ang year na ito. Sana ay magiging magkakasundo tayong lahat at sana ay magpatuloy ang magandang pakikitungo hanggang sa magtapos ang year na ito," Principal Marc Perez said in his welcome speech.

"Thank you, principal Perez," Vangie, a senior, the emcee, said. "Now let's here a song from this school's well known band, Parking 5!"

It didn't matter how many times I got knocked on the floor

The students, especially the girls, shrieked as the band emerged from backstage with their instruments. Kathryn and Julia, on the other hand, had their eyes widened in shock when they heard their favorite song by their favorite artist was playing.

After the chorus, the bassist of the band went close to the mic and sang the next verse. Kathryn looked up and noticed that it was the guy from the bus earlier.

There were days when I was just broken, you know
There were night when I was doubting myself

It didn't matter how many times I got knocked on the floor
But you knew one day I would be standing tall

"Kath, okay ka lang? Parang natunganga ka yata?" Julia asked her best friend.

"Uh..ha? Yung kumakanta kasi, ano...nakasabay ko kanina?" Kathryn said, unsure.

"Ah, ganun ba? Swerte mo, sikat na sikat yan dito."

Sikat? Bakit di ko kilala? Kathryn thought to herself.

"Ano ba pangalan niyan?" Kathryn asked.

"Daniel. Daniel John Ford Padilla." Julia replied with a smile.
