"Are you coming in, Van?" Charles called from the stairway and to the opened front door where Vanessa was standing, scanning the entry way. "I don't know Charles. This doesn't feel... normal." Vanessa said as she took her first steps into the house holding one box from the moving truck. "Listen..." Charles started to say as he walked down the numbered wooden steps. "I know it's old. But trust me it's been fixed of every little wrong it had. No leaks, no termites, no foundation problems. It's been flipped." He finished as he grabbed the box from her arms. "Charles it doesn't feel right." Vanessa felt a slight cold chill slide down her neck.
"What do you mean?" He set the box down and looked at her intently. "Like..." she said. There was a moment of silence. Vanessa was overwhelmed by the feeling that it was not just Charles and her in the house. "Vanny?" Charles called. "Oh. I mean, it feels- haunted." She cringed at the words she chose. "Haunted?" She thought. "Vanessa. You're really think this is haunted?" Charles laughed. "You just think that because it is big and old just like in the movies. Let's face it. You're a sucker for horror movies." He held her shoulder. "No, Charles. Listen—
"It's not haunted. If something happened in this home the realtor would have had to have told us- legally." He grabbed her chin and lifted her head. "We've finally found our forever home." He put his hand on her engagement ring, "Soon we will be married," put his palm to her stomach, "the baby will be here, and we will be able to live the life we have been working for." Charles looked down at Vanessa.
"I just don't feel like we are alone." She tried to explain to him. "Baby." He kissed her. "This house is not haunted. I'm here. Trust me." He kissed her again.
"But what about the nights you don't come home, or you work late?" Vanessa said as she sat down on the first creaking wooden step. "You will be fine. You know why?" He said, sitting next to her. She lowered her brows. "Because it's not haunted." She sighed. Vanessa knew that Charles just would not understand what she felt. Vanessa had always been so sensitive to paranormal things, entities, really. She never told Charles because she didn't want to lose him like her other serious relationships. Vanessa believed that he would leave her and the baby if he found out what Vanessa has seen and gone through. "Okay?" Charles said holding her hand. Vanessa sighed and replied, "Okay..." "Great! Now let's finish carrying in our things. Shouldn't be too much longer before dark and we still need to order dinner." He stood to his feet. "Hey! And no heavy lifting." He said winking at her hinting at her pregnant self. "I'm only a few weeks pregnant I can still lift things, Charles." Vanessa said as she stormed out of the house. "Vanny, calm down I was just trying to play around." He grabbed the kitchen supplies box and walked inside. Vanessa sat on the edge of the moving truck, "This is going to be one hell of an experience."
