"Ugh, how about no?" I tossed a pair of plain, black high heels over my shoulder and picked up another. This time it was a pair of hot pink stilettos with golden spikes along the back heel. "Now you're perfect. Whoever you used to belong to had good taste."

I slipped them on and walked out of my closet to admire myself in the full-length mirror Jack got me as a present for moving in. If I had known leaving that awful house would have been the best decision of my life, I'd have done it sooner. Sure, my new home couldn't compare to the Ritz, but at least I had a room all to myself. God, I don't think I'll ever get tired of the sound of that.

My old roommate, Penny, was the most annoying girl in the world. She always borrowed my clothes without asking and never stopped talking about some dumb Korean girl band. How Penny can be a fan of their music but not understand what they're singing about seemed super stupid to me. Like, get a life?

I twirled in front of the mirror loving how the heels showed off my toned legs. Jack was going to have a hard time resisting me when he got home from work, I'm sure of it. I twirled one more time for the hell of it. Facing the mirror again, I screamed when I saw another face beside my own in the mirror.

"What the hell June!" I turned around and glared at her. "What're you even doing here? Aren't you supposed to be at school?"

June stuffed her hands into the pocket of her dingy sweatshirt, obviously an old hand-me-down, and gave me a pointed look. "Gee, I could say the same for you Stace."

Ugh, here we go. I flipped my hair and faced the mirror, going back to checking myself out because, hello, I look amazing. Unlike someone else who had a stick up their ass. "Please, as if I'd waste my time there. I got better things to do. How'd you even get in here? The door is locked."

June pointed behind her. "I know, but the windows aren't." She stepped forward and placed a hand on my shoulder and said, "Come home. Ms. Mitchell is gonna freak when she figures out you ran away. I can't keep lying to her. Aren't you worried she'll send the cops after you?"

I shrugged her off, feeling super annoyed. "News flash, I didn't ask you to and I don't care. I'm eighteen and according to Jack, the laws won't apply to me since I'm of legal age." I smirked. "You, however, are still seventeen. What would Ms. Mitchell say if she saw you now? If anybody is running away it's you. Not me."

"I'm not running away. I'm here to bring you back home. Look, you can't just do whatever you want okay?" June walked over and stood in front of the mirror forcing me to focus on her. She badly needed a haircut, her bangs practically covered her face. "You can't just give up on high school and join Jack's stupid gang. You're gonna get yourself in jail, or worse, killed."

"Ugh, you are so melodramatic. Get a life, please." Brushing her off again, I went over to my vanity, another gift from Jack, and used the mirror there. "And what home? You seriously can't call that hellhole a home?"

June followed after me. She can be so stubborn, it used to be cute but now it was getting on my last nerve. "Yeah, I do. I spent almost my whole life there and sure, that place sucks sometimes, but it was all we had."

I laughed bitterly. "It was all you had Juney. Still is, meanwhile I have this." I gestured to everything around me. The entire room screamed pink and pretty and it was all mine. Emphasis on mine, meaning I didn't have to share. Something June would never get since she always had a room to herself at the group home. "Jack gets me anything I want. I mean, look at these shoes! Aren't they gorgeous or what?"
